It's that time of year! We're getting ready for Diwali!

My experience with Diwali decor is limited to the traditional decorations we used when I lived in India many years ago: kandeels, string lights, fresh floral torans, oil diyas in every doorway and powder rangolis. Like this:

    All images are from Google

These days, especially in the US, fresh marigold garlands, oil diyas, outdoor rangolis are not very practical. So I'm looking for new ideas and trends — stuff I can buy or make myself.

Please share ideas for indoor Diwali decorations. And also for Diwali crafts.

Text, pictures, links are all welcome.

my relatives in USA get plastic rangoli and use that. They use lovely cushion covers and spreads from India to give it
    a traditional effect.
Look at Youtube for inspiration as lots of them using discarded cds

    have fun

@Amica how did the 2017 craft project go? I hope it went well! I am starting to slowly wrap up my mind around the fact that the house needs deep cleaning, de-cluttering (1/2 room at a time...oh dont ask; the rooms are not big but you know how it is with growing families) etc.
I am also thinking of some crafts (for kids and as well as me).

Any ideas? I saw a wreath craft that can go on the front door which i am planning on getting the kids to make. Last few years I used to change the drapes into handmade curtains made out of saree. This year I would love to do something different...

lets share some ideas? At least you and I, if no one else want to join?

OK..I am unable to link anymore but you know what you mean right? some kind of a Diwali wreath.
I wish we figure out a way to make the marigold garlands here. Not with fresh flowers ofcourse...just something to wrap around the banister (of the staircase).

@Rakhii I gave up on this project last year since nobody else seemed interested. Now that you're here, I'd love to give it another go.

Is your blog still up? I'm looking for ideas.

Try these or these. I haven't yet done them myself.

I don't decorate outside the house, just indoors — string lights and paper lanterns (from the Indian store). But now I'm all excited about trying something new. Thank you!

Amica, pls see in red abover.
We used to have some nice competitions for Diwali in the forum, like diya making etc. Let me see if they are still around. I have small kids at home. last night we made some diyas to make a wreath.

I'm looking forward to the pictures. :)

Do the silk sari curtains last? I've wanted to do this for a while but couldn't figure out how to line them.

Plastic sounds like a good idea. Or felt. They could be stored and reused, too.

The diya wreath looks very cute!
