I am also traveling to India in mid of March this year. This is purely based on my experience.

1. airways

I always prefer Etihad for travelling basically because of the service and also the travelling comfort i.e I try to keep the time of travel after transit short like 3 to 4 hours and this is available only in Etihad.

2. route
The route for Etihad is Chicago - ABudhabi - Chennai.
Chicago to AbuDhabi is I think around 16 hours and it is 3 hours transit time and then from Abu Dhabi to Chennai it is 3 to 4 hours. So total time come to aroun 22 to 23 hours.
You can also choose stops at Brussels, Amsterdam
There is a direct flight(AirIndia) from Chicago to Delhi, but for chennai wait time comes to about 8 hours so I dont prefer this.

3. price

One way it will cost from $650 to 720, return journey starts at $1200 might vary, you can check in makemytrip or cheapflights for better understanding.

4. safe and comfort

As I said I prefer Etihad I feel it is comfortable and safe, this is based on individual preference.
I have travelled about 3 times from US to Chennai.


5. food

I normally prefer veg food when I travel because I have travelling sickness problem. if you really like non-veg you can go for it.

i too vote for etihad. it is very comfortable. try to book as early as possible since the prices might go up as the school vacation will begin from june.
