That's a good post. IIT/IIM definitely do not compare to top US schools. However, at the same time, I feel not every one can afford to study at Harvard or MIT or such other schools. And ,I feel, for those students/children who are living in US it is comparatively easier to plan the logistics(applying,visiting,relocating etc) than those applying from India.

I'm wondering what test do non-US residents take to get admitted to under grad programs in US? is it SAT?

The main issue with Indian education is,in school/Colleges ,most of our life, we have been conditioned into thinking that grades / degrees / certifications = success.

Just one small problem: the real world doesn’t work like that.

Everything is based on money, rather than grades or paper designations.

All the parents plz make ur children aware that In india minimum 50% to 82% of college seats/Govt Jobs/ promotions in Govt jobs including in IITs/IIMs gets filled up based on reservations not based on Merit. Even 90 to 95% govt Scholarships/aid for students is based on reservations not for meritorious students or needy people.

In India merit is a joke.the sad thing is that in states like Tamil Nadu the caste-based reservation fraction stands at 69% and is applicable to about 87% of the population.

SO In India success in college admissions/Govt Jobs depends more on reservations than merit. plz teach ur children how to win the unfair game.In the real world Everything is based on money, rather than grades or paper designations.

All the parents plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz dont waste ur time discussing/teaching ur kids about India or Indian politicians(So called great leaders).Indian nationalism is political instrument.Use ur time for other productive purposes like teaching ur kids survival skills etc

I loved the movie "Arakshan" (watch it if u can!)...the reservation issue in India, which leaves lot of hard working and intelligent children dipressed and demotivated has been highlighted to some extend! MERIT and only Merit should win!!!.......... imagine these guys get into medical schools with 50 %, what kind of drs. will we have??? I feel my life threathned whenever I C myself at the mercy of one of those drs. !!! MIT, Ivy league/ Oxbridge....even Imperial has done well in the last 4 yrs. But then these are not within the reach of the commonmen in India. If our politicians culd give a representation for reservation in the UK/US universities they would do it, not for their love for their brethren but as a tool to put more votes in their kitty! Disgusting lobbying!

Not even 50% ,few years back( before or around year 2000) some students even got admitted in to medicine or MBBS scoring negative marks like -2 in Medicine entrance examination on one southern state.

Very informative! Technically I am at a loss of words to comment, I am from a pure science sector with lotz of bio, patho, psycio gone into my making! Though Financial services sector is Latin and Greek to me, I enjoyed reading the post...I would call it "Fame and fortune simplified'.

If possible send ur daughter abroad for graduation itself, if money is not a constraint( i have seen many girls from delhi and mumbai coming to USA for graduation for studying in top colleges like Ivy league) so that she gets exposure that she needs to succeed in above said industries.

In India at graduate level what we study is scrap & irrelevant to times. but in USA & other countries there are lot more specializations which are relevant to finance & moreover they are practical..Most of the above said firms hire from top colleges even after graduation,
of course not in India.)

I did my professional course from one of the most reputed universities in India, was experienced a bit, when I started working here I was with a grp of the same profession multi-national (German, French and Americian) professionals. My theoritical knowledge was ok, but practically I felt like a moron!
When I had children I made sure I put them in an International school for the resons stated by you above. Hopefully they will make it to one of those.

Dear Sisters,

To add to the above, Yes Indian Education system just lands to Byhearting and mugging up and scoring marks in the Board exam. That is not all where is the practical knowledge after even completing a degree students only remember what they have mugged up.

Basic education pattern needs to change to compete in the Global scenario....????

Second to next is money which buys seat in professional colleges and the real stuffed one loses his chance against money and his fate is called up there and ends up somewhere else....

Our ABDUL KALAM ji's VISION 2020 needs to be fulfilled then there should be a drastic change in the Education system and god only knows where we are trekking to.....

Amen about the Doctors!! I seriously fear for my life if I have to put myself in one of those doctors who got through without merit... I mean, the MBBS course is tough in itself.... even bright kids find it hard to cope....
