None. Brutus, none. Camphor (பச்சை கற்பூரம் not the naphthalene pellets commonly sold as கற்பூரம்) , incense sticks (ஊதுவத்தி), and Sambrani (சூடம் not மட சாம்ப்ராணி) are all associated with spiritual practices in Hinduism and many other religions. They may help to condition the mind towards spiritual thoughts, since olefactory stimuli (swank word for smell) has very strong associative triggering of thoughts. Arunadhri
Hi, Burning camphor has its own meaning in spirituality. Aroma thats comes out when we burn camphor is strong enough that it kills any eveil spirits around us. Also, the camphor piece is equivalent to our body. When our body is light with the fire of knowledge it is supposed to erase our ego or ignorance (that is what is actual knowledge is about) and lead our way towards HIM who is present everywhere. Regards, Anjalie
Like most items used in Hindu rituals, camphor is a symbolic representation of spiritual changes a student aims for. By using those items ritualistically she is able to stay reminded of and focussed on her goals. Ancient motivational technique...
Thanks DNM for the response, thats interesting indeed. I read somewhere, don't remember it where though, that it it burns cool without leaving an ash residue, which symbolizes consciousness and hence Aarti being performed with Camphor has a spiritual significance and made me ask this question.
