காசி வர்மன் என்ற மன்னன் தலை வலியால் துடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தான்.அரண்மனை வைத்தியர்களால் குணமாக்க இயலவில்லை.வேதனை பொறுக்க இயலாத மன்னன் அகஸ்தியர் ஆஸ்ரமத்தை அடைந்தான்.உடல் நிலையை ஆராய்ந்த அகத்தியர் " மன்னா ,நீ தூங்கும்போது மிகச் சிறிய தேரைக் குஞ்சு உன் மூக்கினுள் நுழைந்து மூச்சுக் காற்றை உள்ளே இழுக்கும்போது மூளைக்குள் சென்று தங்கி விட்டது.இப்போது அதன் வாழ்வும் வளர்ச்சியும் உன் மூளையில் தான்.இதுவே தீராத தலைவலிக்குக் காரணம் என்றார்.

மன்னன் மயக்க நிலையில் ஆழ்த்தப் பட்டான்.5 நிமிடங்களில் மன்னனின் கபாலம் திறக்கப் பட்டது.மூளையின் மேல் பகுதியில் நாலா பக்கங்களிலும்

விழிகளைச் சுற்றியபடி தேரை உட்கார்ந்திருந்தது.

அகத்தியர் யோசித்தார்.

" இதை எப்படி எடுப்பது?குறடை வைத்து எடுக்கலாம்.ஆனால் குறடைப் பக்கத்தில் கொண்டு போகும்போதே தேரை இங்கும் அங்கும் ஓட ஆரம்பித்தால் ,மூளை முழுதும் சேதமாகிவிடுமே என்று யோசித்தார். ஒன்றும் புலப்படவில்லை.

குருநாதரின் திகைப்பையும் சிந்தனையும் கண்ட சீடன் சொற்ப நேரத்திலேயே தேரையை வெளியே எடுத்து விட்டார்.

வாயகன்ற பாத்திரத்தில்,தண்ணீரைக் கொண்டு வந்து அதைத் தேரையின் கண்ணில் படுமாறு காண்பித்து தண்ணீரை ஓசைப் படுத்தினார்.அதிகமான நீரைப் பார்த்த சந்தோஷத்தில் தேரை பளிச்சென்று தாவிப் பாத்திரத்தில் குதித்து நீந்த ஆரம்பித்தது.

உடனே அகத்தியர் 'சந்தான கரணி'எனும் மூலிகையால் மண்டை ஓட்டை மூடி விட்டார். தலைவலியும் பறந்து போய் விட்டது.

குருவுக்கு மிஞ்சின சீடர்கள் பலர் இருந்திருக்கிறார்கள் .தேரையை நாசூக்காக வெளியே எடுத்த சீடன் 'தேரையர்' என்று புகழ் பெற்றார்.

எந்த scan ,xray ஒன்றும் இல்லாத நாட்களில் உயிருள்ள தேரை மூளையினுள் இருப்பதை அகத்தியர் எவ்வாறு கண்டறிந்தார் ?


இதே மாதிரி சுவையான செய்தி டாக்டர் ரங்காச்சாரி அவர்களின் வாழ்க்கையிலும் நடந்தது.நிறை மாத கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண் வயிற்றில் அடிபட்டு பொது மருத்துவ மனைக்கு அழைத்து வரப் பட்டாள் . அடிபட்ட வேகத்தில் குழந்தையின் குஞ்சு விரல் வயிற்றின் வெளியே நீட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தது.டாக்டர் ரங்காச்சாரி தான் attending doctor . டாக்டர் வேகமாக வெளியே வந்தார். அங்கே மற்றொரு டாக்டர் வராந்தாவில் சாவகாசமாகப் புகை பிடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

ரங்காச்சாரி அவர்கள் சக டாக்டரிடமிருந்து வேகமாக சிகரெட்டைப் பிடுங்கினார்.தான் புகை பிடிப்பதற்கு மறுப்பு தெரிவிக்கவே இவ்வாறு செய்ததாக சஹ டாக்டர் நினைத்தார்.

அதே நொடியில் உள்ளே சென்ற டாக்டர் ரங்காச்சாரி அவர்கள் தாயின் வயிற்றின் வெளியே நீட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்த குழந்தையின் பிஞ்சு விரலில் சிகரெட்டின் புகைந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் நுனியை வைத்ததும் குழந்தை சட்டெ ன்று விரலை உள்ளே இழுத்துக் கொண்டு விட்டது. டாக்டர் வயிற்றின் மேலுள்ள ரணங்களுக்கு மருந்து போட்டு அனுப்பினார். 10 நாட்கள் கழித்து அந்த பெண் சுகப் பிரசவத்தில் குழந்தையை ஈன்றெடுத்தாள்.

டாக்டர் ரங்காச்சாரி தேரையர் வரலாறு பற்றிப் படித்திருப்பாரா என்று தெரியாது.

ஆனால் வைத்தியர்களுக்கு படிப்பறிவு மட்டுமல்ல, சமயோசித புத்தியும் மிக மிக அவசியம்.


A king named kasivarman was suffering from severe head ache.The treatment given by the palace physicians proved futile. He approached sage Agastya.
The sage on examining him found out that a small tadple ( baby frog)has entered his nostrils while he was asleep and somehow traversed to his brain. As the tadpole was growing inside his skull, it resulted in an unbearble headache.
Sage Agastya gave him some herbs to make him unconscious and opened the skull. As diagnosed the tadpole ,with his eyes wide open, was seeing all around.
If foreceps were used, the tadpole might jump here and there causing damage to other parts of the brain.He was at a loss at to what to do.



The shishya who was eagerly looking at his tense master, was able to take out the tadpole within seconds.


He brought a broad based vessel full of water and made distinct jal-Jal sounds of water by shaking movements inside water. Hearing the sound and seeing large area of water the tadpole jumped into the vessel and started swimming with joy.
The sage applied some herbal paste and closed the wounds.The king was totally relieved of pain.
The able asst came to be known as "theraiyar"-Tadpole is known as 'therai' in Tamil.
In those days, with no x rays or scans ,it is strange how Agastya was able to diagnose the presence of a tadpole inside the brain.


A similar instance is reported in the biography of Dr. Rangachari, a famous physician in General Hospital of Madras.


A full term pregnant lady got involved in some accident. She was brought to the hospital with injury in her stomach.The little finger of the baby was protruding out of the stomach.
Dr. Rangachari , came out fast, came to the veranda where a co doctor was smoking leisurely.He snatched the cigarette from the co doctor as if to rebuke him, rushed inside, just touched the baby with the hot end of the cigarette.The child responded fast to the hot stimulus, dragged its finger inside. The able doctor immediately closed the wounds, dressed her up. The lady gave birth to a normal child after 10 days.

It is not known whether Dr. Rangachari had known about Agastya's incident or not.But he was known for his smartness, kindness and samayochitha buddhi.
Dr. Rangachari's life size statue is found at the entrance of G.H. Madras opposite Central station..
