    22. Breed butterflies or giant moths

Breeding and raising butterflies is a hobby that is as rewarding as it is interesting, and the ability to view the process at close range is indescribable. Raising butterflies can be done at home or in the classroom and provides a learning experience that all age levels can benefit from. While raising butterflies with the intent to release them back into nature is perceived to be the best case scenario for the well being of the butterfly, breeders continue to support the beneficial contributions that the business creates. And those that have ever had a butterfly wedding will agree that butterfly breeders do ultimately release the butterflies back into the environment.

    23. Cultivate rare succulent plants and cactuses

Succulents and cactuses are some of the most fascinating plants, which you can cultivate in a small greenhouse, your apartment window, or your garden. Succulent plants, also known as succulents or fat plants, are water-retaining plants adapted to arid climates or soil conditions. Succulent plants store water in their leaves, stems, and also in roots. Succulents are booming in popularity for two reasons: they are beautiful and nearly indestructible.

Home-brew beer has become a hot item in recent years. Many beer drinkers have found out that the usual can of "Bud" is just a tasteless waste of money. There are a few brands that deliver more tasty beer, but the real thing is to brew it yourself. It is easier than you think! But you need some experimenting. Check out the following web sites: The How to brew your own beer magazine wikiHow: How to brew your own beer Home brewing equipment

    26. Listen to audio-books!

If you are bored to death while driving listen to one of those audio-books. Beware! You will laugh so hard, you might drive off the road!

Garrison Keillor / Paula Poundstone (2000): Pretty Good Jokes. Prairie Home Companion, Highbridge Audio; Original radio broadcast; 2.5 hours on 2 CDs edition

    27. Keep bees!

If you have a garden it is a nice hobby to keep bees. You are also doing something for the environment. Bees pollinate crops and provide honey. You can have your own sugar factory in your backyard! Put honey into your deserts, on top of ice cream or in your tea. It tastes much better than refined sugar. And honey is incredibly healthy: It contains a mild biological antibiotic, which is protecting you against colds and other infections. In the middle ages, honey was used as an antiseptic ointment for wounds and rashes (and it worked pretty well). 28. Search for unusual roots and create a natural work of art!

Root carving is a traditional art in China. Integrating ingenuity and craftiness, root carving employs ways of expressions similar to wood carvings, sculptures and stone carvings. Root searching and carving is a fantastic hobby for those who like to hike in the woods. Is also a great activity with kids. Take you children to the woods and hunt for unusual roots! You will be surprised how far the little ones can walk, when they have something interesting to search for. And searching roots is less risky than searching mushrooms or berries - which can kill you if you collect the wrong ones. 29. Cultivate gourmet mushrooms!

It may be a bit unusual, but if you have a garden you may be able to make some money by growing mushrooms. The market for mushrooms continues to grow due to interest in their culinary, nutritional, and health benefits. Check out the links below! 30. Make a time lapse video!

You probably already own one of the most fascinating tools for speeding-up time of boredom - your camera or video recorder! Use it as a time machine to accelerate everyday events to such an extent that they become surprisingly strange. Some of the best time lapse videos have captured things that change very slowly. It's a bit silly to speed up a street scene in New York City, where everything already moves at light speed. Better focus on things that we can hardly see changing (unfortunately it can take a long time to capture these changes). The key to excellent time-laps videos is the lighting. You must figure out how to get eactly the same light in each shot - otherwise the video flickers wildly, which is quite disturbing (except you want to achieve this effect). There is a whole "science" related to time-laps videos. If you really want to get into it, you need a lot of patience and at least some technical know-how. 31. Bake your own bread!

For those who find most of the commercial bread in the supermarket horrible it my be a good idea to bake their own bread. The two secrets of baking bread are the right flower and the proper heat in the oven. Forget about those silly (and expensive) bread-baking machines. They are all trash! Just buy various kinds of bread flower and then experiment. Don't despair! As long as you can eat the bread without a chisel and a hammer it is OK. It takes a while before you get the recipe and the heat of the oven right. The Simple Dollar: How to bake your own bread Guardian.co.uk: Golden rules - How to bake your own bread
    32. Refit all your light fixtures with energy-efficient light bulbs!

Agreed - it's not the most thrilling activity, but it is good for the environment and eventually saves you a lot of money. About 12% of your home energy consumption goes into lighting. Do a little research before you purchase energy-saving bulbs. Some of the bulbs at your Home Depot are just cheap crap from China! They cost several times more than ordinary bulbs, but burn out just as fast. You can't recover the cost of the bulb from the savings of electricity. If you really want to save money, you must purchase high-quality energy-saving bulbs which last several years. Even better, purchase the new diode-based bulbs. They are very expensive, but you don't have to change them for up to 10 years. Its worth to use these expensive bulbs in places which are hard to reach - and where it costs your time (and therefore money) to change the bulbs.
Of course, if you really want to save money on enery in your home you have to start with making your heating and cooling more energy efficient. Almost 30% of all domestic energy consumption goes into heating and cooling. By far the most efficient way to save energy in heating and cooling is to better insulate your house. American homes are notoriously badly insulated. Even new homes have often flimsy insulation of the attck or the basement. You can save hundreds of dollars per year with a very modest investment. Sometimes, you can save a lot of money by just properly sealing the cracks around your window A/C unit. If you have to replace your heating or cooling do a little research! There are huge differences in energy efficiency between brands.

    33. Do you like woodworking? Build some nice toys!

Don't give your children or grandchildren the plastic trash for Christmas that piles up in the isles of toy superstores. You can build some really nice toys for young children from wood. There are just a few rules you should be aware of: 1. Never apply small objects (such as nails or buttons for eyes) that can fall off and be swallowed by the child! 2. Smooth all corners and sharp edges! 3. Use natural products for varnishing and painting. Be sure that the paint does not contain lead! FurniturePlans.com: Wooden pull toys Woodworking Plans: Toys
    34. Learn how to fly!

Is it your dream to fly an airplane? In Australia you can get a Private Pilot License (PPL) for some AUS$15,000 to AUS$25,000 - including everything! A private pilot license typically takes 60-70 hours of flight time. With a PPL you can fly through any type of airspace below 18,000ft in Australia. 35. Collect, enjoy and study images of radiolaria and other creatures of the sea!

Never heard of these things? They are tiny microorganisms living in the sea with absolutely amazing skeletons. The German naturalist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel published a book in 1904 with thousands of beautiful illustrations of these creatures and their skeletons. Maybe this can get you into studying biology! Ernst Haeckel: Online biography Ernst Haeckel: Radiolarien (in German) Wikipedia: Ernst Haeckel: Kunstformen der Natur. (illustrations)

    36. Join a hiking club!

Hiking is one of the most healthy physical activities. Unlike jogging, it doesn't put stress on your joints and there is no danger that you cross your limits and have a heart attack (at least not due to the hiking). While hiking you can enjoy nature and have a relaxed conversation with your partner. And you need little equipment. Yet, you exercise your body from head to toe - particularly if you hike in a brisk pace. Wild Earth Adventures: Hiking Club American Hiking Society US Geological Survey (USGS): Hiking trails

The limerick packs laughs anatomical In space that is quite economical, But the good ones I've seen So seldom are clean, And the clean ones so seldom are comical.
There was a young woman named Bright Whose speed was much faster than light. She set out one day In a relative way, And returned on the previous night.
A flea and a fly in a flue Were caught, so what could they do? Said the fly, "Let us flee." "Let us fly," said the flea. So they flew through a flaw in the flue.

You are frustrated with politics? Stop complaining! Join a party and change the way your district, city or country is governed. Don't sit in front of your TV and watch others change the world! 39. Collect, record, enjoy folk music from around the world!

There is is more in the world of music than hard rock, R&B, Rap or the classical composers. Listen to a Gamelan orchestra, a Peking Opera, popular music from Western Africa or a Peruvian folk group! The world of music is incredibly diverse and much more fun than listening to the same old tunes over and over again.

    40. Do nothing!

Seriously! Do nothing. It is much more difficult than you think. Find yourself a nice bench in a quiet corner of a public park and sit down or just lay flat on your bed. And then do nothing and think of nothing! I mean really nothing. You will not be able to do that the first time you try. You thoughts will wander about this and that and before you even realize it, you will be thinking about something specific - such as having sex or eating a tuna sandwich. Your nose will itch or you might get a funny feeling in your legs. It is extremely difficult to do nothing and to think nothing. The great masters of meditation have practiced for years to be able to do it. Once you can, you begin to "float". Your body experience will change and you will relax completely. In fact, you might fall asleep. It is certainly the cheapest way of spending time when you are bored. Wikipedia: Autogenic training Wikipedia: Meditation Learning meditation
    41. Make macro photos!

Most people user their digital camera for one purpose only - point and click. However, there is so much more you can do. Most cameras have a macro setting, which allows you to get very close to the object of which you want to take a picture. Check out your camera manual! If you are serious about macro photography you need special equipment. However, the secret of making interesting photos is not the equipment, its your imagination. Choose unusual perspectives and objects! Here are some examples: WIRED: Top 10 macro photos Flickr: Best macro photos Wikipedia: Macro photography
