    Friends,

I am getting incredibly bored as a H4 wife. I am thinking of starting to learn a new language. Want to take you all's advice on two things..

    a) Which language to learn?
    b) What is the best approach to learning a language?

I eagerly look forward to your suggestions. Thank you.

    Hi Akalya,
Try to find out the community college near your place.
And find out what are all the languages they offer.
If your living place is of hispanic area (spanish speaking)
you can very well learn Spanish. It will be useful for you to
communicate with them. Spanish is the language which has
been spoken by the most no of countries.
I have taken spoken French classes in NJ community college.
    Regards.

Depends On What You Want, Akalya!

The desire to learn a language is by itself a noble one. What language depends on what do you want to do after learning the language. If it is to find a career in language go for a couple of European languages apart from French, German portugese etc. Translators are in great demand. But if you want to learn a language for the simple pleasure of learning, for appreciating the nuances of a language my only suggestion will be Sanskrit. The language is one of the richest in the world. The literature - well to put it short - only a couple of other languages can boast of such heritage. More than anything else your connection to India will be deepened. I can assure you if you work hard for just about six months there will never be a day of boredom for the rest of your life.
In case you are a computer buff, go for a good, robust computer language. C plus plus is good. And so is java.
One suggestion for your learning process: please don't have any other motive in learning. Don't learn a language to show off, to have better career prospects, to impress others etc. Learn it just for the sake of learning it. It will be like dancing. Dancing for the sake of dancing and not for the purpose of getting across to the other side of the room.
May the Goddess of Learning be by your side always.

Learning any language is quite easy, just watch that particular movies/songs/TV ads, in that you would be able to learn more easily.

See the movies of the particular language you want to learn with sub title. It helps to learn that language easily.
