    Hi,

    @ll indusladies,

Well i'd like to talk about another problem plaguing our life's.

If this is wrong place , i request the moderator to move to appropriate place so that people suffering can have a support group.

I only posted it here as i thought it is as much a social problem as a skin disorder.

Now this is about a times of india article i read today
The Times of India on Mobile

it is regarding the problems people with vitiligo face and how
it is also used as discrimination in marriages.

Women are at the bad end of it cause they dont hide it and thus there are less or no proposals and those who are settled also face humiliation.

Also generally people with vitiligo find employment with difficulty.

Even one member of family having vitiligo causes social stigma on all the family.

Some things which even i had in mind were also clarified.

    1. Vitiligo does'nt spread by touching.

2.it doesnt cause any physical or mental problems
it is purely a skin disorder

    3. It has highest incidence in indian subcontinent.

There are many treatments also both for localised and spreading vitiligo.

Many patients go into dipression or suicide due to social name calling.

The two tamil equivalents (ven kushtam , ven kuttam) were banned by tamil nadu government in 2010.

A organisation Shweta Association is a vitiligo support group.

    Dear Quebec
I am happy that this thread of yours has been nominated by Dinny for FP. Seeing it languishing in General Discussions without a single response, I have moved it to Face and Skin Care Section. I do hope this thread generates some interest and discussion in this Forum.

    Dear Boogyman,

I would have never known this post but for Dinny. I know it is not contagious. I have interacted with at least two people who had Vitiligo. The first one was my immediate boss when I worked in India for a software company. The second one is my client even today who is a multimillionaire and no one dare to tell him anything about his condition. One is an Indian living in the United Kingdom now and the other was born and raised in Nigeria even though he is of Indian origin. He lives in the US now. They both are very successful and extremely talented individuals.

To be honest, I didn't know that, this was the name of the condition. Thanks for an informative post.

I have known a couple of people in school, who had Vitiligo. My own grand father had few patches on his legs and he lived to be almost 90+ years and was healthy.

Hope more people become aware of this and not treat it as taboo.

One of the most well-known sufferers of this disease was Michael Jackson. Even with his wealth and means he couldn't live with it, and got his entire body de-pigmented.

    Quebec,

Thanks for the informative post. Like utopia, I did not know the name of this condition. Hope people have more awareness on it. Today, I learned about it, which I did not know earlier.

    Dear Quebec,

Sorry I am late in coming here to let you know that this post has been nominated to FP by our Dinny! Congratulations!

It is really a good deed by you to write a post on Vitiligo. Not much is known about it and it is good that people become aware of what causes it and how it cannot be transmitted by touch and it is not infectious. That is one of the biggest fear in people who do not understand the condition.

It is unfortunate for those who are afflicted with it. But like all the mishaps in life, one has to learn to live with it and make the best of it. Viswamitra has told us how two of his acquaintances have made it big. Where there is a will, there is a way. I too have seen many couples where one partner is afflicted with Vitiligo. I am sure that those in know how do not mind it and there are people for whom the person within matters and not the outward appearances.

A good effort to spread the word Quebec, keep it up!

    L, Kamla
