There are numerous ambi maamas, numerous Koma (short of gomathi) atthais , and 'n' number of Chee-dhaa (yes Seetha has been so beautifully massacred in our family) maamis in our family. There was a ramar-cheedha (who once played Lord Rama in a play, isnt that ironical too, bah!), mela-cheedha (an aunt of mine who lived in mela theru - translated to High street). Really wish all these relatives had unique names.

OMG...that sounds like MY family hahah...we have a few cheedha's - cheedha patti and theru kodi cheedha too.....i think tambram families of yester years did have dearth of names.... koma, baby, cheedha, lakshmi...the height was in my my mom's perima's house - perima was koma perima and their cook was also koma... so when the peripa would call out "komaaaa"...both would rush to him hahahaha

But the best part of it all, when I meet them in a family function, and there is suddenly an aunty in front of me, asking me, "Ennai theriyardha" (literally translated to "Do you recognize me"), I dont have to rake my brains much! I just say Goma/Chee-dhaa, and voila, here is the atthai whom I hadnt met for ages!!

Thanks tanoshi.... I think this convention of naming the children after the ancestors is unique to india and unintentionally becomes the cause for such confusions Even te girls are given their ancestral names but somehow they dont cause as many problem..

I agree..maybe cos we scatter away from the family to join new ones. But in my family even they don't get to escape..lol My mother's name is HemaLatha. There was already a Hema in the family when she married, so she was called Latha in my father's place and Hema in her mother's. When her brother got married, there was yet another Hema and this Hema is the victim -they changed her name after marriage to Radha to match her husband's name Murali..lol
After this, anyone with the name Hema would prefer avoiding connections with the whole lot f us..lol

Now my question of many years is answered! Why so many ba's and by's?? My mom's side is a huge family, my dad's side is not any less!
So much so that when I go to my native my friends would call it 'Varusham 16' family! So many thathas called baba, babu, baby, chinna, chellaiah so on and so forth! Chittapaa would have a 'rourkela' prefix beacuse he had lived there! Baby because he was the youngest? Until A few years ago I did not know an uncle's real name because he was 'chellaiah' mama! God knows why, may be he was thatha's chellam!

hahaha...true...tambram are a unique lot My mom at 70 is still called papa and my aunt who is nearing 80 is called baby.... my daughters laugh out everytime someone calls out to my mom by her nickname papa ...

How very uncanny! Do you have powers like 'Aavi Amudha' to be able to connect with the dead? My maternal grandma never called me by my name for the same reason that you have so eloquently explained. I was just named after my thatha who died while I was nestling in my mum's tum as a six month foetus. They named me promptly Srinivasan and when everyone started calling me cheenu, my grandma started calling me as 'Paappa'! She continued to call me so till her death even when I had two 'paappas' of my own! My daughters would call me by this name in front of my friends and embarrass me no end!

You have virtually exhausted the list of ambis and I find it humanly impossible to add to the list. This thread has become a bench mark for thoroughness! By the way this Anatharaman Subbaraman, did he manage to catch at least one flight? But I would like to catch your flight of fantasy!

...my mom is called "paaapa" and my daughters make fun of her all the time... my cousin was named ganesh after my grandfather...but my grandmother used to call him "genchu"..and that name stuck...noone calls him ganesh anymore!!

Dont know if he did manage to catch the flight ... but i am sure being called "superman" would have more than made up for it

Kondhai is soo cute... i too have an aunt by name "baby". baby seems to be quite common for women in iyer families ...giving close competition to "ambi" i guess

I have seen in maharashtrian weddings, the brides name is changed ...giving her a new identity in the in-laws house... i always thought that custom was charming.... realised now this name change has an advantage too...avoiding confusions and also choose a matching name with that of the groom - interesting

LOL Sumitha. How very true! Growing up, we had a family in our neighborhood that had such fascinating nicknames for their young ones like 'dabbu', 'jillu', 'lochee', 'jittu' etc. :rotflAnd naturally, the same family had many ambis in its family tree. Ambi mama, Ambi chithappa, Ambi athimber etc. etc......:confused2:They even had a grandmother that everyone called 'Paappa Paatti'.:spin Like I said, fascinating group of people and without doubt, I loved every one of them. I really feel sorry for the rohans in your family!

It is a good Saturday for me...returning after a long time to IL i was happy to read and laugh so much with Meena's snippets and now yours.

Loved the joke on the man missing his flight. It reminded me how I almost missed getting my driver's license.
I was waiting for a long time for folks to call my name for the driver's test. They were announcing some names and almost an hour later I was fuming how inefficient these folks were, etc. etc. Finally I got up and went to the counter asking when they will call me, they said they've been calling my name at least ten times!

How would I know my three syllable name could sound like, "camel", "karma", "camilla", "oh-i-cant-say this", "this-is-so dfficult"...and so on.
