My 11 wks old son who is exclusively breastfed has been having green mucusy stool with blood streaks in it for last 20 days . The trip to ped and ped gastroentorologist suggested to avoid milk, soy, egg, nuts, corn.

After 15 days of all this when i still saw spots occasionaly , I skipped wheat and lentils also on my own. so basically i am on rice/veggies and fruits now.

Yesterday morning suddenly the diaper had not just spots but a lot of mucusy blood and 2 such consecutive diapers - so I am thinking what did i eat to offend the baby's gut suddenly. The only thing i did was drink almost 4 oz of carrot juice a night before. Could this be it ?

Well today so far no blood ( keeping my fingers crossed) and keeping formula handy to give in case it happens again. But I want to know if anyone suspected or confirmed CARROT allergy in a breastfed baby. The doc and lactation consultant think it cannot be carrots but thats the only thing that was different.
    Help ladies ...

It can take upto 6 weeks for the body to get rid off the residual milk, wheat, soy or egg in your body. So do give it some more time. I highly doubt it is carrots. Most probable cuplrit is either milk or eggs. My son was diagnosed with it around 6 weeks of age and I avoided milk and milk products till he was 4 months old.

    Thanks for your reply phamensa.
I understand that elimination takes time, the blood spots were getting scarce but all of a sudden blood in diaper increased so much that I think I recently had something that the baby is allergic to and only thing that came to mind is that carrot juice...

hmmn was it blood for sure? could it have been that carrots made the poopy darker than usual? Like my son's poop would turn red when I ate beets or green when I ate spinach.

Hey, have you tried to get rid of all hidden dairy? You did say you are on rice, veggie and fruits alone, so wondering if there is a label you did not read carefully. Cheat sheet on dairy
The other thing of course is a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance from oversupply. It is known to cause blood in stools. kellymom.com :: What causes blood in baby's stool?

When DS was teeny tiny, I saw other symptoms of allergy and in another breastfeeding support group, one mommy did say her LO cannot tolerate carrots, but that is the only person I have heard say it amongst a community of moms whose kids have intolerance. Looks like a possibility but very, very rare. I am guessing you are drinking a preservative-free juice, but generally preservative and colouring matter are the other common allergens found in food.
Elimination diet is hard on mommy and not seeing the desired result can be putting off, I do hope things resolve quickly for you and your LO. Hugs.

    Thanks Tikka and phamesa,

Still going on with elimination diet, struggling with what to eat now !!

as you said milk takes 4-6 weeks to get out of system , so is that ok to see the blood spots often during that time. one of my friend had the same issue but once she stopped milk she saw blood spots only a couple of times whereas in my baby's case even after stopping milk , even after 4 weeks there 's blood almost every alternate day ,, could it still be milk allergy ?

Rachna, my baby did not have blood in stools but reflux as a sign of his milk allergy. At around 2.5 months we went off milk (preemie formula for him and milk for me). We saw results around 3.5 to 4 months. It apparently takes up to 3 weeks for the CMP to leave your body AND another 3 week for it to leave your child's...
I would suggest wait another couple of weeks. Do also note if your baby is showing typical signs of an overactive let down like the clicking sound from the latch getting broken with the force of milk, choking, coughing on let down, the baby pulling off your breast.

Thanks tikka .. i will wait a couple more weeks for sure. well right about when blood in stool started there was some oversupply issue too .. i have tried to manage it by block feeding , its much better than before , so letdown happens only if my son sleeps through the night , during day this does not happen anymore.

in panic i left almost everything thats on allergen list and am srrviving on rice and vegetables .. running out of what to eat ! but anything for the baby .. will keep you posted how it goes .. thanks for all your advice on this.

The other formula which has extensively hydrolysed protein is Nutramigen. I know of some moms in the allergy forum I was talking about using that with some success in eliminating blood in poo. Are your docs talking about an allergy testing at any stage... or testing to see if other issues like an autoimmune disorder is involved? Maybe an appointment with a GI specialist... Wondering if there is a way to find out what is causing those blood in poo. I so hope your baby feels better soon. Hugs.
