    Activism- Passion or Profession

When people are committed to correcting a wrong, they don't think what is going to happen in their personal life. They think about how they are going to correct things for others. Such people are called activists. Some of them are:

Medha Patkar of Narmada Bachao Andolan

Anna Hazare of Indian anti-corruption movement

Teesta Seetalvad of Citizens for justice and peace - communal violence in Gujrat

    Sunderlal Bahuguna of Chipko movement

Swami Agnivesh of Bonded labor liberation movement

All of these activists are unique personalities in their own right. Highly educated, madly dedicated to their cause and badly treated by vested interests.

They are not free from controversies. Some brand them for playing on the hands of foreign hands that finance their activities for their own good. Some are even branded anti-national.

    Dear Hari Sir,

In activism, three principles become essential:

    1) It is done for the common good of many with no personal benefit in mind
    2) The one who preaches, need to practice it himself
    3) The life of the activist must be an open book with no controversies

All other activism would never take-off or get shelved without those principles.

    Dear Shri Viswa,
Thanks for your first feedback. I also think that to start with the activist has all the three attributes. However it is rather too difficult to stay away from controversies. People will always find some thread to pull at. The reason being there are many interest groups involved. Activism takes place because one group finds itself in a disadvantageous position as compared to the other group. Take for example the Narmada movement. One the one hand the dam was necessary for the overall development of the area in the state and on the other hand there was the displacement of the people. Same thing happened in Bhagirathi Dam in Uttarakhand. There need for coal and iron ore and there is need for the livelihood of the tribal. There are various interest groups. There is need to protect the earth from global warming and then there is need for more roads and vehicles.
In such a conflicting situations charges and counter charges are bound to come. Personal life of the activist should by all means be above board but they need funds to keep the tempo and here is the catch.
For some it is passion, for some it is profession.
