Sorry if this post is in the wrong place but I just wanted to let my fellow ILites know about this book I read over the weekend. It's called the burning bride. It's about Uma who thinks she is getting married to the man of her dreams, but slowly descends into an ever escalating cycle of humiliation and violence. It's a great read. The author is trying to raise awareness of violence against women in India and 10% of the sale profits from the book is being donated to the Asian Circle to fund Oxfam projects to end domestic violence in India.
I just read reviews on Amazon, sounds like a great (intense) read. No wonder lot of people practice female abortions (esp in North) .... it's because of the debt that keeps on piling, i.e. dowry. Of course, gov't is trying to stop these abortions, dowry, etc, but change starts within ones self.
