    Jayasala maam,
You have raised a very important issue seen in recent times. I wish this would go to the notice of the concerned i.e. the shastrigals. You can try to get this published in some tamil weeklies or so to come to their notice. It is really disturbing to watch the cellphone interruptions when serious religious activities are going on. Fortunately, we in Bangalore here for the last 30 years or so, are with the same shastrigal/their family - they have become our family shastris - First the father and after his demise , his son is carrying on the tradition and all our family functions we relegate it to them. He has got a policy of answering phone calls only between 2 to 3.30 pm in the afternoons for all his customers - i do not know about his family members. However urgent the issue, he will ask us to talk to him only during that time. We have found that he himself and his group also are instructed not to attend to cell phone during the important events. Wish all would follow the above to retain the sanctity of the religious activities.

    Dear joylokhi,
Thank you for the response. For the communication addiction, sastrigal is not an exception.I am glad that your Sastrigal is highly disciplined and answers calls only at stipulated hours.
The Sastrigal profession is totally commercialised and we have packages for all the samskaras.
Just like the CMD is reminded of the daily events, the principal sastri also is getting inf about the venue of his engagements. Since the wedding and Anthima Kriyas are well earning professions, they have equal importance as for as sastrigals are concerned and we have to shelve our superstitions reg hearing about inauspicious events during a shubham event.
But I am sad to note that even well learned Sastrigal swerve from Dharma when it comes to money matters. Some years back my MIL's sister passed away in our house. She died at about 1o'clock midnight.
As per our tradition our day starts only after Suryodhayam and our daily timings start only at sun rise.
But our learned Sastrigal reckoned the next day as day of death and quoted Rly timings.
The simple reason, the 12th day ,the fat money earning day coincided with another wedding from a rich client. Since wedding could not be postponed, we had to perform 12th day ceremonies on the day reckoned by him.Even today, the Guru continues to be the same person and the kartha is performing annual shraaddham on a wrong thithi. The very essence of performing shraddha on the thithi of 'death' has become futile on account of the lust of the so called family Guru.We can't blame today's children who care more for sincerity than for paddhathi.

While shaky with total comprehension, I often use translate.google.com to see what the excitement is all about:

Another gorgeous event is going on. Then the cell phone of the Shastri was taking place. The sisters who immediately took it up listened to the message from the other side and asked, "How are you going?”. Think about those who are there.

I have encountered many such events.

This is a tough one.... after some struggle, I was able to understand about the body in queue for the Sastri's attention. In phoren, there is always an announcement to switch off the mobile phones before any event where the ringing phone, or talking person would certainly annoy everyone else, and make the experience of being there disturbing to distasteful. The Gruhastas who organized the event ought to have taken the necessary effort to relieve all the paid-performers of their mobiles, as well as request the audience to shush-up and be respectful of eveyone else who is present to listen to the vedic chant.

In very large venues (like staidums) when phoren chanters are asked to come in for a 10 to 15 minute chant (of whatever the audience might fancy), they often have a perfectly recorded chant playing on the mega sound system, while the performers merely lipsynch to the sound. Mobile phones are not an issue in such events.

The disrespect shown to the vedas, as well as the audience, should make people stay away from such events, stay home and play their own cassettes or dvd's.
