GETTI MELAM - SUPRAJA - AN APPLE OF MY EYE
Few months gone by. An alliance for Anna came up from a reliable source. Anna went to his own astrologer in Bombay with that girl’s horoscope and found the match was good 8/10.
It was also pre checked for matching by my parents from a different astrologer. Secretly Anna made back ground check and visited the girl too at her office - a reputed bank’s branch. Within a month marriage fixed. Anna called on my in laws with presents and his wedding invitation. My MIL STOPPED HIM AT DOORSTEPS and accorded him cold reception and torn the wedding invitation into pieces and threw it in trajectories. She asked him nasty questions and told at any rate she would not permit me to attend his wedding. Yes - I could not attend my brother’s marriage.
Some months gone by. Manni had been empathising for me and cooperating with Anna. She and Anna and generously funded expenses on my account. I heard she got soon transferred to Bombay branch of the bank working in double session.
The week end was coming to a close. There was no sign of SR leaving home. When enquired he told he had resigned as he was going to be a partner in a business. ( I chuckled inside). He desired that I should get immediately some bulk funds from my dad or raise loan in office. I suggested separate establishment for him & me, so that he & I can concentrate better on family life & business. He just laughed away. Many valuables of his parents & mine began vanishing and he was hardly found sober and there were days public brought him home inebriated in day light too! He & FIL made most of my time uncomfortable and scary.
It was Friday at 9 o’clock. I stood worshipping in front of that framed image of Nellai Gandhimathi thayar and removed over my head the so called yellow sacred thali with gold coated saradu and left it gently over the shelf beneath. I took a pair of pedestal silver lights of one foot height gifted to me my parents. With that and whatever valuables I could salvage of my personal effects gathered and packed left once for all in laws (place) announcing am no more interested to live with them and if SR wants to join me, it could be on my terms - at my parents place.
Few days later in my office , stocky MIL astounded blocking my way to lift . She pleaded or and supplicated me to return to them. She had come remembering it was my salary day. Now she begged for some money! My colleagues were watching me. I did not speak a word to her and left.
My immediate superior CSK was watching me ignoring MIL. Without showing any reaction, he went into the office. A man of clean habits, soft spoken, polite in nature and teach things to docile staff in a way that one can always easily grasp, approachable & congenial. Others & I - were envious of his ways of achieving targets ahead of his peers in the office & his outstanding performances. He got approbation and accolades from district collectors for his execution of development projects ahead of target date. A disciplined soft spoken young art’s graduate from rural Salem.
He has been watching my progress from day one. He was one of the few from my office who attended the marriage reception handing me a bouquet of flowers and a metal framed silver image of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari.
He knows that I had recently requested for amending my local address in office records restoring the previous one.
I happen to see him during lunch hours frequenting his black gowned lawyer friend at hotel opposite high court and adjacent to our office. I remembered Anna’s suggestion to find a lawyer preferably a woman to consult for separation and dissolution of my marriage with SR.
I approached a few -unknown to my parents -who listened initially demonstrating their empathy but later began dropping hints to accompany them secretly to cinemas and hotels.
I did mention this to Anna. Later he went to one such person’s house and bluntly told his family to guard and protect themselves of their reputation!
I then decided to approach CSK for help. I told him the need of a lawyer specialising in divorce cases for consultation & to file application seeking divorce from SR. He seemed to have been bewildered. He suggested that I must exercise patience and caution and said passage of time would cure hurt feelings but when I told him the reasons, with great reluctance had agreed to talk to his lawyer friend.
In presence of CSK the matter was discussed with his lawyer friend (LF) who needed certain documents and further discussions. I patiently listened to LF and answered all his queries regarding the failure of the marriage, cheating about SR’s employment and his dismissal from bank service, manipulation of horoscope, theft of my jewellery, harassment etc. He noted down all points and within a fortnight he filed the petition.
