:worship2: Our mythology has so many such stories with subtle messages but messages of great depth and importance. One can never get tired of reading them again and again. The beauty is that every time depending on our circumstances and the condition of our mind, it acquires a new meaning and significance. Thanks for sharing, @Thyagarajan Sir.

    Dear Shri Thyagarajan,

Sorry for my second response or interference.

It appears to me that the real meaning of the word Sharanagathi or surrender has not been properly understood. Our elders, by the study of many scriptures and texts, have conveyed to us the meaning. Despite this, we get the impression that the word surrender means putting at the disposal of God our body, our mind, all our powers and all that we have. We take it that 'placing these before God' is the true meaning of the word surrender.

Neither the body is under our control nor the mind.when neither the body nor the mind is under our control, it is not understandable how we can surrender anything that cannot be controlled by us.Reminded of Yudhishtira's pledging Draupathi in the dice game.
So, when you say that you are surrendering to God your thought, your word, your deed, it is simply a kind of trivial satisfaction to yourself. This cannot represent the truth and the meaning of the word surrender. Saranagathi really relates to another aspect and it should be interpreted in the background and context of divinity only. It is only when you accept and when you believe that the divine is present in every human being and in every living thing, that divinity is omnipresent, then only can you understand the meaning of
true Sharanagathi. As soon as you are able to recognize the aspects of the omnipresence of God, 'EGO' disappears and sharanagathi is automatic without the knowledge of the person who surrenders. It is a gradual process within.

There is one other thing which we have to recognize and take note of. We know that Krishna and Arjuna were living together for well over eighty years, were meeting each other very often and talking to each other like friends. But at no point of time in those eighty odd years did Lord Krishna ever try to teach anything of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. It was only after eighty years and that too in the battlefield, and that again under some special circumstances--That was when Krishna found Arjuna worthy of being entrusted with the contents of Gita.
Even to do Shranagathi ,it needs credit worthiness-Etra kalangal.,for which Andal prays in her Thiruppavai.

Every person longs for moksha or freedom. That means we are in bondage.
What is that bondage? The bondage is in our own family, in our own home, in which we are tied up and entangled. Your own affection and your people constitute the bondage. That is the chain that is binding us. This is what you may call affection or attachment.

When we are tied up with a chain, there are only two methods to get freed.

1.To become very strong so that you can break the chain.

2.You can make yourself smaller and smaller so that you can slip out of it.

The second one is called Bhakthi marga, in which you recognize there is a master and make yourself subservient to the master and win His grace. This is as an attitude of 'Daasoham' or behaviour which by implication proclaims 'I am your servant'. you are developing humility, your ego diminishes and It shrinks you so much as your humility grows that you can slip and get out of the chain.
That is Sharanagathi. For us the path of Bhakthi is the first step of Sharanagathi.

The other path, which is the path of Jnana, is the way or getting out of the chain by telling yourself 'Shivoham, Shivoham'; I am Siva - that means you are expanding, becoming bigger, finally you become so big that you can break the chain and get out.

Total surrender also is not that easy, as we imagine.
Perhaps the path of Bhakthi is the first step of Sharanagathi for people like us, who
cannot even imagine about Gnana margam.
Sorry, if I have gone out of bounds.

:hello:Kudos to Madam Sister’s Exemplary elucidation at that. Thank you.
    2. Absolutely there is ambivalence when we use the word Surrender in lieu of SARANAGATHI WHICH IS FAR DEEPER IN purport. I am extremely glad of your rejoinder in which I do also find the echo & pharaphrasing of introductory speech of late Sir Chakraborty thirumagan, Vyasarvirundu fame Sri Rajaji in ms rendered BHAJAGOVINDHAM.
    3. The befitting illustration of options to fettered individual to losen or to turn strong to get rid of samsara bondage vi’s-a-vi’s distinction between Bhagthi & gjana is par excellence.

    4. Thanks for your re-visiting the thread with wonderful thought provoking message.
    Regards.
