:hello:As an antithesis, I am reminded of the court jester who was considered for his superlative performance, the proud (of possession of wealth) King ordered that he would be gifted whatever he demands. He politely and softly in a beseeching manner said that he would be glad if he could be granted total of double of paddy-grain placed in successive squares of the quantity placed in previous square of a chess board starting one grain placed in square one at the top of chess board....... . when calculated the sum was astronomical. the total was sum of 1+2+4+8 +.....................+2*63(2 raised to power 63) that was harvest of over several hundred years in future. The jester humbled the King.
    Thanks and Regards.
    God Bless Us All.

    Dear Hariji,

Selfish desire for wealth and power is considered as greed as defined in the dictionary. Frankly, generating wealth by itself will not amount to greed unless a) one tries to earn them through unfair means and b) try to lead a lavish lifestyle. One needs to have the righteousness in earning wealth and attitude of holding wealth as a Trustee and apply them for good use.

The perfect definition of greed from unfair means can be viewed from what Sathyam's founder did to his shareholders. If you need example in the US, Enron is a perfect example. Leading a lavish lifestyle can be seen from many including Ambani building $1billion house or the politicians and some so called Sanyasis leading a grand lifestyle. If you need example in the US, there are many Fund Managers who lead lavish lifestyle.

Luckily, we have so many good examples in the world. In India, Tatas have been very liberal in giving away wealth for noble causes for years. In the US, Gates Foundation is doing a wonderful job to solve the world problems rather than utilizing all of his wealth for personal purposes. Sometimes, execution flaws happen even in such noble actions.

Well said. Accumulation of wealth in a wrong way or by cheating or acquiring wealth from other's against there will are classic examples of greediness. However working hard for earning more money is definitely not greed. With inflation and the current lifestyle , more is always less!

    Dear Viswa,
Very true. One should earn money by fair means and the volume of such earnings is not and cannot be in question.
However, I think all those guys cited in your comments did not earn their money by fair means. They might not have used unfair means but they did took advantage of loopholes in the system. Even Tatas who are otherwise considrpered very ethical businessmen, were involved in Radia tapes. True Tapts themselves might not have been involved , but they cannot deny that all was done without their knowledge, if not consent.
Fact is money, huge money, cannot be earned by purely honest means. We all know about what goes into the board rooms and how inside trading is used to multiply money.
But then , on the hind side , it is good. They provided jobs to millions.
I am in favor of saving as much as possible because future is uncertain. Earn as much as possible that is legally yours, even if means taking advantage of legal loopeholes under the advice of experts. Otherwise you know, it may be difficult to meet unplanned expenses.

Ninety percent of the Indian population falls below the poverty line and it is like for these people, that there is isn’t much positive either to think about the future or about savings. When life threatening diseases like kidney failure or cancer strikes them, they have nowhere to go and there is absolutely no help forthcoming from the Government. While the rich can buy a kidney or a liver, the poor do not have any means to lead even a normal life.

:hello:Absolutely. No where else except India you would find vast disparity in wealth distribution so unevenly. A very small percentage holding Lion's share of Indian wealth and vast majority slog for them for a pittance and the mighty rich hustle the tail of the indigents. Government one after another, schemes plans to enrich the already rich and impoverish the poor and indigents and plan taxes that collects that is ploughed back to those support the party in power. In point of fact, many among India's vast poor, in order to settle or minimise their debt(s), sell of their body parts or choose sterilisation and many agents busy helping them and the doctors for harvesting and selling to affluent NRIs. Illegal Surrogating has increased manifold. this is unity in diversity!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks and Regards. God Bless Us All including India's indigents.
