This is what we have been taught since childhood - not to be rude come what may. There comes a time when it all looks meaningless.

Upto a point, yes. Constant subjugation either leads to depression or revolt. There has been cases of kids committing suicide as they were being bullied all the time with i recourse. You might have heard of such cases in IITs and other educational institutions where ragging has caused suicides.

As far as possible, unless we are some sort of menace, we try to be decent. There is however a risk of being taken for granted. In order to set an example, we become a the odd man out.

Decency is a virtue, without doubt and we all must observe it. Our parents passed it on to us and we should pass it on to our children. The very basic of social order rests on respect for each other. However, under extreme circumstances it becomes a liability also. We have to learn to fight for our rights too. We live in a society which at the same time says about survival of the fittest.
No single individual or community or association of people can shoulder the edifice of social order. It has to be joint effort.

    Dear Cheeniya,
In the same movie, if I remember correctly, the good and decent brother Sashi Kapoor shoots the bad and indecent Amithabh Bachchan in the line of his duty. Karna karma is no doubt the most unhappy character in Mahabharat. But having come to know of his parentage and the injustice meted out to him, he does not hesitate to fight against his own brothers. For his his decency tells him to support Durydhana.

    Dear Viswa
    ,

    Dear Viswa,
Thanks for this analogy. It's another way of looking at things. Good sense prevailed or if I may say good sense was enforced. The opposite would have been catestrophic. But thinking loudly, I find another angle to it. Self preservation was paramount and on a personal level each one knew it that disobeying the orders may lead to death anyway. By following the orders the chances of survival were more. This does not happen when a stampede takes place like it happened recently in Mumbai. They had no time to show decency. Had there been some authority to take control, some lives could have been saved. It's human nature to take control of himself or herself when there is no one to do that.
We are as decent as we are permitted by the situation.

Adding one to the list: Decency demands that if someone apologizes or says sorry, you have to forgive them and accept their apology, whether you want to or not. If you don't, you run the risk of being cast as the wrong-doer. The option of acknowledging an apology but retaining the right to accept it or not, is often not easily available as there is the expectation or question that "you got an apology also, what more do you want.'

Butt still we pass on the same message to next generation! Would we tell them not to be rude and not decent? No! We do not.
