If westerners have no idea about Indian food or their eating practices, then there is a point.
But if Indians (no matter wherever they live) have a problem with their fellow citizen's eating patterns, then it is their lack of understanding, lack of exposure, lack of knowledge and in a nut shell, it is their limited or narrow mindset. Obviously everyone knows that certain Indian foods are best if eaten with hands only.
I can't imagine any better ways to eat sambar, rasam, or butter milk with rice than with hands.
Just like how it can get awkward to eat noodles or pasta with hands. The original taste would be missing if you change the eating pattern here.

I have encountered such criticism directly, and I would always say the famous saying "I know exactly what my hands touched and how they were cleaned, but I have no clue how clean the cutlery is - particularly in restaurants or parties where the cutlery were previously used by someone else.
Particularly in India or in any rural/small towns in any parts of the world, the hygiene of the cutlery available in the restaurants/buffet is very subjective.
Unless you are battling with your metabolism; hence on diet mode like me, there is no reason to eat sambar & rice with cutlery.
Eating with hands is not a sin. It is not a bad practice and we should not feel embarassed just because someone has no decency.
