@anika987 this post made me smile . I grew up in a small town where if you wore jeans you were thought to be "forward " . In fact in my pre university college wearing salwars was mandatory . My mom would insist I wea salwars while going to relatives houses . No wonder that girls who hated these sexist restrictions wanted to wear jeans , it was a sort of rebellion . The minute I moved into a big city from my town for work, I ditched my salwars and brought myself a whole new wardrobe of jeans and tops. It was a symbol of my new found freedom and my dislike of all those years of dress restriction . Poor salwar/ churidars took a big hit . Now I live abroad, I hardly ever get to wear any. But when I come to India I end up wearing salwars at my older relatives places because I am uneasy wearing anything else there for fear of being judged . The problem is not of salwars or churidars themselves , I think they are a very good outfit. Problem is that they are imposed as a dress restriction and that's why women tend to look down on them.

That is because the traditional girls were either not allowed to wear clothes of their choice or were made to feel bad about wanting anything other than the traditional.For them ,wearing western clothes is about independence and having a choice.

The westernized girls have always had the choice and for them the saree may have been a welcome change . I wonder how many of them will continue to wear the saree in daily life for ever.

There should be 100 dhoni/ lungi/ pyjama kurta pact for guys too. Wonder how many will give the western wear for the traditional wear ,back to roots wear.
