How To Tell Coworker I Cannot Teach One Of His Classes

A coworker is adjunct professor at university three hours away.

earlier this year he asked if I can teach one of his classes, i.e. be a guest speaker.

I was excited and said yes. the class is in less than two months

now I realize I'm under lots of pressure at work and managing things at home, there is no way I can be guest speaker.

how to tell coworker I cannot teach one of his classes.

I feel sad and bad because I really wanted to do this. but I. am physically and mentally unable to do at this time.

please advise

Hey OP,

Have a one-on-one chat or a telephonic conversation or an email...which ever works for you....

Tell them that you are really excited and happy for the opportunity but that at the moment you are not physically or mentally prepared to do that.....Talk about the work commitments you have already taken and trying to complete and that you need some time to sort things on a personal level

If any opportunity like this ever comes up again, you would love to participate

Tell your coworker right now or within the next few days so this person can find another guest speaker without much trouble.

Tell him gently that with the current work pressure and other happenings in life you will not be able to concentrate on it. Better tell him now so that he can make alternative arrangement.
On the other hand if you know someone who might be interested in taking a class just link them to him.
