    Hi,
Bursting cracker in home is prohibited in USA. If u like, check ur nearby temples. They have allotted a day for people to burst cracker in nearby ground with firefighters supervision. Also they will have special Pooja and Indian food available during this time. You can meet many people there and you will get that festival feelings.
First three years we did this but later the crowd is more so we just celebrate Diwali in home by going to movie and having lunch out. I will prepare sweets in home and will share it with my neighbors.

some of the communities with individual houses do let burst crackers . Usually we have frnds get together , pooja at home and then visit to temple.

If it is a working day, at work we go out for lunch to an Indian Restaurant, buffet. If it is a weekend, go with friends for lunch to an Indian Restaurant buffet. (Dinner is expensive).

High light of Diwali - watching Diwali movie of favorite actor's first show.

At temple, we celebrate "delayed" Diwali on weekends.

We decorate the house with small lanterns and put a traditional big lantern on main door. Light diyas all around the house, Make rangoli, etc. For us Maharashtrians Diwali is for 5 days, so I prepare 5 sweets for 5 days plus I make faral items (Ladoo, Chakli/Murruku, Chiwda, Karanji/Gujiya, etc). On weekend we have Diwali party where we invite neighbors, friends and family. On laxmi-pooja day we visit temple. Since the birth of my son, Diwali is all the more special as his b'day will always come in Diwali so we have double celebration. We make a point to have family photo-shoot every year.
