In North India, Navratri is celebrated with the 9 forms of Durga or Navadurga.

    1. Shailaputri - This is Sati or Parvati. She is worshipped first day and rides on a bull.
    2. Bramacharini - This form of Durga practices austerity and blesses with divine grace. She appears peaceful and bliss ful the opposite of rudra roop
    3. Chandraghanta- She has a half moon on her forehead like a bell. She rides on a lion and has 10 hands, 3 eyes and weapons. She represents bravery.
    4. Kushmanda - She is believed to be the creater of the universe. She holds a rosary on her hand and rides on lion.
    5. Skanda Mata - Mother of Skanda or Kartikeya. She appears holding Kartikeya in an infant form. This is the form of motherhood.
    6. Katyayani - The story behind this goes as being the daughter of a Rishi Katya. She was born as Katyayani as the rishi did penance to ask for such a boon.
    7. Kali - She appears fierceful, dark complexion, three eyes and flames while breathing. Her vahan is a donkey. Her right upper hand is raised to grant boons to worshippers and right lower hand removes fears. She holds a sword and provides protection to people who pray.
    8. Maha Gauri - Worshipping her this form wipes sins and provides devotees to lead a purified life. The story goes that she developed a dark complexion as she was doing penance in the forest for years on Shiva under the sun. Then Shiva gave darshan and cleaned her with the water of Ganga. Her body regained beauty. She rides on a bull. She also holds a damaru and poses to give boons to her devotees.
    9. Siddidatri - She is believed to have supernatural healing powers. She has a blissful pose and rides on her lion. In the puranas it is mentioned that Shiva worshipped her and was blessed with Siddhis. This form of Durga became the Ardhanarishwar avatar.

One country and various ways of worshipping one goddess's various forms. Awesome.

Any idea how they came about? (missing raagam for 5 and 10)
