Why do some men rape women?

Man is basically from the Animal clan. There is not much difference between Man and Animal except that Man can think and pretends to be a social animal. Like Animals, humans steal, kill for food, defend their territories, attack other territories and mate. Being a thinking animal, Man has been able to harness technology to achieve his ends and that is the only thing which differentiates him from Animals. Some may say, humans kill for pleasure while Animals don’t. The intelligence of humans is also consumed by bias, greed, vices and ego. The capability of humans to think intelligently and convey to each other has been a blessing as well as curse, depending on how they look at it. The collective actions of humans reflect the health of the society. Yet, I stick to my belief that humans are always guided by Animal instincts.

The only part I believe where humans differ from animals is the ability of man to think regressively and rape a woman. The worst part of it is Gang rapes and rapes of young children. I can never think of male animals packed in hordes raping a defenseless female. Such a weak spot can be observed only in males. The ability to think and act and outsmart each other leads to mindless competition in this chaotic world brought closer to man using the power of technology. Man always had a head start in making progress compared to a Woman. A man can develop muscles, possess knife, guns and weapons of mass destruction but the weakness pervading man is his misconception that the greatest strength of man lies in overpowering a woman sexually. Of course, such men are few, else, there would be chaos in the society. However, a society with larger nos. of such sick men poses danger to the future of mankind.

We can have adequate defense against terrorism, a police force to check crime but still we fall short. But the greatest danger to society happens when a woman is raped. The most disturbing part is that women are generally raped by their neighbors, friends, people known to them, worse even blood relations. Most of the times, rapes are committed by known persons and occasionally by groups of misdirected youth or men. Often, the victims are fully clad and decent which dispels the myth that the fault behind the rapes lies with the women. On the other hand, women wearing revealing clothes seldom get raped because they carry an attitude and are bold. Regressive men do not target such women, they let loose after weak, defenseless women. A terrorist like Ajmal Kasab is not a threat to society. In fact, such attacks by terrorists or criminals bring the society together. But a rapist poisons the entire society. The first reaction after a rape is that the society starts distancing itself from the victim. No one speaks so passionately against rapists compared to other crimes.

The Joint Family system has ceased to be in existence and the lack of values in parents in nuclear families get carried over to their children. Things have come to such a stage that sex, rape and murders have become daily source of entertainment for us in our morning newspapers. In this materialistic society, lust and greed have taken precedence over everything. The Youth of this country pick up such things very fast and commit anti social acts. Date rapes have become common. The parent-child relationship is no longer that of a friend, philosopher and guide.

Lord Jesus Christ had said to his disciples to forgive such evil men for they do not know what they do. But these men are committing such anti social acts so fast that they do not even have time to repent and make up for their mistakes. By the time, they realize their mistake, everything is destroyed and nothing remains.

Why do some men rape women? A man’s mentality is conditioned either by the company he keeps or by the surroundings he lives. They are conditioned to believe that a man’s superiority lies in sexual prowess over a woman. Even the life of a happily married couple gets destroyed if they do not bear a child. The society will not allow them to lead their lives peacefully. The husband is mocked around for not being able to bear a child. The wife bears the brunt of insults. Even in college life, one sane youth will be mocked by his insane group for his inability to flirt women. The point I want to make is, some men get insecure about their manhood and weakness sets in. They take refuge in drinks, watch pornographic movies, access adult sites and attract bad company. This makes them prove a point and indulge in false bravado. Their targets are often known persons – someone from their own family, maidservants, neighbors, friends, office colleagues etc. Given a situation where they find women weak and defenseless, they resort to rape. Men with much distorted and regressive mentality indulge in rape of strangers or gang rape. While the poisonous elements in the society spread, even women are not immune to it. They collude with men and indulge in activities unbecoming of an animal and befitting of a Devil.

Some men often claim that women entice men to indulge in such behavior. This has no basis. As far as some women filing false charges against men, it is due to that fact that in a sick society, every regressive act evokes an equally regressive reaction. In such a society, the bias towards giving birth to the male child increases manifold. The outlook of society towards rape has to be changed. Mere education won’t help. In the absence of value based education, such immoral activities continue to exist. People even have audacity to comment on the character of the victim i.e. the girl in question. Sometimes, educated people behave far worse than uneducated rural folk. Only against this backdrop of a responsible society, Police Stations will deal with rape cases sensitively rather than the lackadaisal approach that they have been adopting usually. The role of the media also plays an important role. The greatest barriers to rape cases happen when accused come from influential families and the victims buckle down to pressure. Stringent action should be taken against the offenders that will act as a deterrent against those who act like devils.

The women should not indulge in self-pity and tackle such men head on if they happen to fall in such unfortunate situation. Even staring at a man and throwing attitude helps. Such sick men are basically weak in mind and do not dare if they find woman to be powerful enough. Apart from self-defense, every woman must have knowledge of laws I would like to end this blog by quoting some instances of landmark directions of the Supreme Court against the menace of rape.

“In one instance, The Supreme Court directed a rapist to undergo the 10 years jail sentence awarded to him by a trial court in Madhya Pradesh, a term the high court had later reduced to six months on the ground that he came from rural background.

It held that “The fact that sweeping changes were introduced (in section 376 of the Indian Penal Code) reflects the legislative intent to curb with iron hand the offence of rape, which affects the dignity of a woman” “It is a violation with violence of the private person of a woman; an outrage by all means. By the very nature of the offence it is an obnoxious act of the highest order.” “The physical scar may heal up, but he mental scar will always remain. When a woman is ravished, what is inflicted is not merely physical injury but the deep sense of some deathless shame”

In another instance, the court has already sought the Delhi government’s response on a Delhi high court judgment that acquitted a rapist on the ground that since he had passed the IAS examination while undergoing the sentence in jail he has redeemed his crime.

The Apex court had also quashed another HC judgment that acquitted a rape convict saying he had committed the offence under the influence of liquor. In another significant ruling, the apex court held that a rapist could not be acquitted merely because the victim girl is used to sex. Quashing a cryptic judgment by the Allahabad high court acquitting two accused on the charge of abduction of rape, SC said even if it is hypothetically accepted that the victim had lost her virginity earlier, it did not and cannot in law give license to any person to rape her. “It is the accused who is on trial and not the victim” the court had added.

Recently, The Supreme Court asked a Tamil Nadu resident sentenced to life for raping his brother’s wife and then burning her alive along with her 13 month old child why he should not be sentenced to death. The Supreme Court also pulled up the Tamil Nadu government for not appealing against the High Court judgment.”

Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru are not the threat to India. The threat to our society comes from these rapists who are a part of us and pollute the environment from within.

The increasing incidents of rape in the capital of India shows that we are a sick society. I care a heck for the FDI or the GDP growth rate, when we can't even secure ourselves.
