    Dear Mindi,
For the slaves ,adiyans -scheduled caste ,all the upper caste people are Thampuran and thampuratti.
They were untouchable also. They were not supposed to enter the house of upper caste people, but thankfully my parents were very broad minded, they taught us to see the human in everybody, irrespective of caste.

    Dear Seetha,

What a lovely snippet! I am so thankful to be connected to Indusladies. There is always something new to learn. I must be only from the neighboring state, yet while in India, we just mind our own business and life and never got to look beyond the borders! Now, thanks to internet, I am able to cross that ignorance boundary at least in tiny steps!!

'Thampiratti' is from Kerala region I guess although such customs and titles exist in almost every state of India unique to each. In visiting your native village and meeting Ammani and her granddaughter, you have not only breathed in fresh air, but got to see the fresh awareness in its people. I too wish the little girl a bright future and glad things turned out this way. But when I see some depictions of life in many parts of India and read about the atrocities still existing, I think we have a very very long and tiresome way to go. But go we must, of that I am sure.

The folk song is simply too precious. You are right in saying that we can learn about their lives and what existed through such ballads. I hope these songs are preserved and documented for we can learn a lot about our past through such songs that has been sung through ages.

Enjoyed Shantana's lullaby song though it is more familiar.:)

Congratulations on being nominated to FP by Bhavnam!

    L, Kamla

Is Ammini a common name in Kerala?

In TN it is a generic name used to address a woman(Not used in current generations).
