    hi all :hiya,
i know you have been waiting for a kantha thread with instructions- so finally here it is!

KANTHA the term applies to the quilted wraps made up of pieces of old cloth- usually saris- this was the r=hand work of the rural women of BENGAL. these quilts were held together and decorated using running stitches, which later on evolved into intricate designs!
kantha shows similarities to the ALPONAS - rangolis made during festivals, the kanthas depict heavenly vahanas- shiva's buul nandi, durga's tiger, ganesha's mouse; spirals, whorls, lotus, swastik, etc.

there are different forms of kanthas classified according to their use:
SUJANI- thin bedspread used in ceremonies, decorated with mythical characters
LEP - thick, warm wrap decorated with geometric patterns- the quilt!
RUMAL - handkerchief about 12"- square, with borders & corner motifs
BAYTON - a square cover for books and valuables, decorated with mandals, kalash or shankhs- your quilted book covers and pouches!
ARSHALITA- a narrow rectangular wrap for mirrors and combs- like the mordern quilted spectacle cases & cell pouches!
OOAR - a quilted pillow cover with borders, abstract motifs
DURJANI - a quilted envelope - like wallets or folders!

the stitches used in kantha are totally 7 in number even though a lot of people include the herring bone stitch in the kantha.
JOD - these are rows of aligned runing stitch
BEJOD - these are rows of non-aligned running stitches
DHANER SHEESH - these are stitches in a formation of arrows
PAICHANO- these are whipped running stitches
TARA BOOTI- stitches in star formation
KANTHA BOOTI - stitches in the formation of a booti
CHARKHI BOOTI - stitches in the formation of a wheel- charkhi.

    Great stuff . :thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

I loved the combination on yr Tussar silk Muted and elegant yet exquisite.

I also used to teach Kantha and have done a few pieces but all of them sadly have been gifted away.

Let me know if and when you want me to upload my sari pics as it has most of the stitches
