Hi, My baby girl is 2 weeks old now. when she was born, she was lil fair and her body temp was low.So the nurse kept her in the warmer to get her to normal temperature, then she gave her sponge bath. After that she looked lil. dark and till now we are giving her only Sponge bath since her cord is still there. My concern is will she get her color back when we start bathing her? Is any Products or homemade things available to get her color back?Is it too early to worry abt this now? Is everything depend on the gene? I'm fair and my DH is average color.Does everything depend on us? Pls. Help. Thanks, Pinky.

Pinky While I know (though I can't understand why) a fair complexion is very important to some Indians, I would urge you not to waste any time or energy worrying about this right now. It sounds like you have a healthy, lovely baby, and that is all that matters. You are right in assuming that complexion is largely a matter of genetics. People do take precautions to preserve a fair complexion (staying out of the sun, using sunscreen, etc.), but it is largely impossible to create a fair complexion where none existed before (barring lots of money and unnecessary cosmetic surgery like Michael Jackson, who we can all agree just looks scary now). To concentrate on such a superficial aspect of your baby at this stage is doing her a disservice. Please ensure you do not pass on your prejudices to her, as she may grow up with a complex about her own looks because of your apprehension about her colour. Rather, focus on those things that are important - raise her to be kind, well-mannered, and fair in her attitudes to other people, no matter the colour of their skin. I am not trying to change your mind about what is important to you, as you are an adult and believe what you believe. I am just concerned that your child may grow to doubt her value or beauty because you have already begun focussing on this rather unimportant aspect of her physicality at a very early age. Please also resist the urge to use any creams or cosmetics (even home-made) on her skin to whiten it. It is far too big of a risk to her health for far too shallow of a motive. Ansuya
Hi Pinky, Please have a look at the following thread: http://www.indusladies.com/forums/face-and-skin-care/37161-fairness-tips.html Please remember, your baby is a gift from God. Love, C
Pinky, congrats on your child. Well you said it, it is too early to say what kind of skin colour your child will have. Both DH and I are dark skinned and extremely comfortable about it. My now 23 month old was fair skinned as a newborn and looked like his grandmother. They had him under bili and it looked like he had tanned under the light. But it was all the downy lanugo that was becoming prominent. As he filled up, the lanugo went away and he looked fair again. Now that he;s a toddler and he gets a lot of outdoor time, he looks like me and DH. If you keep your child well-nourished and properly moisturise her skin, your LO will glow with health in your care. Afterall, that;s all what we parents want finally.:thumbsup Use either olive oil or coconut oil and massage if your LO will let you. Moisturise with mineral oil immediately after bath and dont use Kadalai maavu, besan, chickpea powder etc, theydry out the skin and make it look lifeless andprone to skin diseases.
