Thanks dg. I wrote this story in Tamil and in English. The Tamil story was rejected by almost all the mags. But a children's mag accepted the English version and published it in five parts. Later Deccan Herald published it in one go much later.

In the place where I live not being able to speak good English is a matter of emotional concern. The problem is in most of the schools they teach everything in Tamil. English as a language is just memorized and vomited at the exam. And this is the way many of our students speak English to start with.
I am happy that you enjoyed the story, dg.
    love,

    Dear Varalotti Sir,

I remember this story very well - after all, I used to read Gokulam (the English version) in those days! No wonder your pen name seemed very familiar when I chanced upon Indusladies! Of course, as I was a keen Women's era reader, that is no surprise!!

When I started with Gokulam in 1991, the quality of stories and articles was something to write home about. Unfortunately, as the years went by, the writing became more and more childish (or was I growing up and outgrowing it?).

I can't say the same about Chandamama - even now, I get a thrill out of those stories steeped in Indian culture. Never mind that the old issues were always better!

    Best Regards,
    Sowmya

    Dear Sowmya,
Thanks for remembering those Gokulam days. This story came as a five-week serial in Gokulam English in 1999. But at that time I was not sure of my pen name and was using sridhar and varalotti interchangably.
I remember when this came in Gokulam I used the name R.SRIDHARRON some funny variation suggested by my numerology friend. But before the end of the millenium I left numerology etc. behind and stuck to my pen name Varalotti Rengasamy. I was writing for about 4 years in Womans Era under the name Varalotti.

You are right about Gokulam losing its standard. In fact I was not happy about the editing they did to my story. What you have here is my version. Their version was not readable at all.
thanks for remembering all that, Sowmya.
    regards,

    Dear Varalotti,

The boy from the village story was very touching...right from the beginning i thought the boy was from a remote village..but got doubt when you said it was reputed school...then i felt he might have managed a scholarship....i knew lekha was going to show hell to poopandi...yeah his name is a bit funny...how did you get this character name??

but,the twist in the middle was too good when we know that he is education ministers son....n lekha has a worst time of her life....when her own father takes up the investigation.....it was so sweet of poopandi that he did not choose to disclose the culprits name when he was questioned...again he waas so kind in mentioning lekha's name that she taught him english....

Truly varalotti your stories teach us to LOVE OUR ENEMIES ALSO.....that is the best part about you a simple message in every story....i imagine if you could write such good stories how kind and loving you might be in person????:bowdown

    Dear Pooja,
I thought of responding to your post after sometime. But saw what you have written in red and prioritized this work.

Let me say at the outset, in the middle and during the end that I am not what I write. I am not as loving as my characters though I one day or other I want to be like them.

To the ILites, to my readers I am putting my best foot forward and am likely to be confused with my characters. Only my wife and daughter know the real me.

Poopandi is a typical rural name in our State. One of my classmates in B.Com bore that name.

This story came as a serial in a children's magazine called Gokulam in 1999. It came as a 5-part serial
Loving your enemies, forgiving them and forgetting their crimes is not just good ethics but good psychology. What is toxic food to the body is hatred to the mind.
That's what I want to convey through this story.
Thanks for the kind words, Pooja.
    love,

No Srividya. Poopandi had wielded the most powerful weapon against his enemy. Something even more powerful than a nuclear bomb, but far less dreadful. The weapon of love. No wonder he won the battle and war hands down.
    love,
    sridhar
