Hi Ladies, I go through posts in Il, like there is no tomorrow. And I find many of you from many regions of India. I am already using this site to get advise on anything and everything in my life along with guidance related to spirituality, cooking etc. I want to use this site to learn a language too. I am married into a Kannada (FIL) -Marathi (MIL) family - who grew up in Andra Pradesh and talk fluent Telugu from generations (My Luck!). But my FIL insisted - Demanded - Laid the law for everyone to talk in Kannada and only Kannada when my husband and his siblings were growing up. My poor MIL had to keep quite and learned Kannada. Everyone in the family followed his law strictly and started to speak Kannada only when he is around:) It is amazing to see how their conversation changes from Telugu to Kannada and back, as my FIL enters and exits the room even now. Same thing goes on phone too.

Now I am the point of attention. I am Totally & Purely - a Telugite. I was expected to learn Kannada from Day one and my FIL got the book 'Kannada in 30 days' when I was leaving for US two days after my wedding. But being here in US with my 100% Telugu talking husband (He doesn't talk to me in Kannada- even for practising for the reason that he doesn't want me to learn his broken and hard Darwad Kannada.) He says, if I am that interested, I should find someone from Bangalore/Mangalore to teach me proper Kannada. My FIL used ask me "Hegiddi" etc on phone..but poor guy gave upon me. Now I have a 2 yr old - very fluent in English - to whom I am trying to teach Telugu. Now I feel like I really need to learn Kannada and Marathi, so that I can give a pleasant surprise to my Inlaws and also that I can teach these languages to my child.

So, any Kannadigas and Maharastrians - willing to teach? I am sure some others also may want to join and learn.

    Hi,

I was in the same boat as you (Telugu married to Kannadiga). I did not know a word of kannada before marriage (ok - two words 'beku' and 'beda'). My telugu is also a hybrid of tamil and telugu as we are from TN. I learnt by speaking to my hubby, with books etc it is difficult. The best way to learn is by speaking. If your hubby is not willing then start talking to your f-i-l in kannada. I'm sure he will appreciate the effort. My in laws family all praise my kannada now.

I have lived in Karnataka most of the time . My in laws are strict with learning tamil. We are tamilian brahmins. being in bangalore havent had much time to learn tamil as we were in and out or blore due to job changes of my dad. Now after my marriage my FIL told me strictly i need to converse in Tamil. I boldly told him yes and flew to US to my husband. in these 5 yrs I have picked up quite a bit of tamil and mix with english for words i dont know .It takes some time and can be done.Ask for any kannada words here and we will be here to help.
    Best of luck.

    Venus,

I'm a bangalorean, but live in Florida right now. For simple kannada try the below site:
    Learn Kannada - bangalorebest.com

When I was young I picked up my hindi thru doordarshan and watching hindi movies. Please DO NOT watch latest kannada movies, they speak the most corrupted, polluted, abusive, cheap version of kannada possible.

If you want, watch Dr.Rajkumar movies as his movie language was good. Not his sons though. Listening to the language does help. if you need any more help, send me a PM. Here are more links:

Thank you very much Krutika.... I'm a Mangalorean & used to speak Kannada to a good extent. But I have lost touch of it, since my hubby can understand a little but can't only the basic beyda - beyku.... & there isn't anyone around to speak too RantBut now, will speak/rabble away to myself.... Big Laugh

Saikripa... the site you mentioned has your wish too of learning Marathi.
    Learn Marathi online

It's always easier to learn a language when there is someone to exchange it with.... But you must also let them know that you are in the learning stage, so as to be corrected rather than laughed at..... 'cos that used to happen when I was in college... My peers would laugh at me when I would mispronounce any word, but the correction wouldn't come :spin

    All the best in learning!

    Hi Venus
Nice to know that you wish to learn kannada, but the best way to learn a language is to have a servant and speak to her in that language along with the 30 days learn kannada, this way you can learn more faster or by watching movies.

Aruna's idea of speaking to a kannada-speaking maid is a good one. Even a vegetable vendor will help pick a few words!

My husband is from maharastra. We have a common mother-tongue, so he doesnt have to bother learning kannada nor I with marati. But when he visited Blore and my uncles assumed he knew kannada, he had one sentence for all questions. 'Nanige kannada barodilla' (I dont know kannada) in authentic kannada accent. Most of them thought he was joking and would continue with Kannada :rotfl

    Hi all,

I am a TamBrahm.... born and brought up in Kerala, so I speak Malayalam and Tamil very well... I am married into Kannada speaking Tam Brahms who have settled down in Bhadravathi... so I had to learn the language once I moved head quarters to BDVT. But, since my in laws spent lifetime till retirement, in the North, Hindi is the via media for all... I picked up Hindi like that.

I learnt Kannada by listening and boldly speaking ( irrespective of the bloomers..) Used to watch kannada movies too... but as kritika says"
" Please DO NOT watch latest kannada movies, they speak the most corrupted, polluted, abusive, cheap version of kannada possible."
