Oh... Honestly I don't have to think about my kids' entertainments on any days, as they are so creative and know how to make use of the time/available things/their energy together to enjoy.

Even if they are left with a few papers alone, they know how to roll them to make a ball out of it, and play with it.
They invent new games, new rules, fight for silly things, and patch up later

Just that, they need each others' company.

If there is only one child, I could see the emptiness in them.
But sadly, I have no idea here to help with.

Do not feel guilty at all. Some of the most successful and most friendly-friends in my bachelors- are single child. They are very empathetic and very good people and it is wrong to label them with a term as 'only child'. They are much more than the label.

I grew up with brothers and cousins were also males. I was an only child with most part with no one to play with. Siblings that play together, are usually of same gender and same age group. That means one has to have 2 girls and 2 boys to suffice the play mate thing, with in 5 years time. Some times, the older sister plays with younger brother, but if the brother is older, it is hard to play together. This dynamics continues in adulthood. So, you see we all are alone/ only in our journey, in some way.

Kudos to you for doing so much for your daughter! Not all mothers take this much of tension for their child's play time.

    1. Perler beads projects - Kid will need your help in the last step of ironing. And you can help get patterns that match her interests. It's addictive even to adults and can really get your creative juices flowing. She can use the finished pieces as gifts to friends, table decor, room decor, holiday gifts to teachers, etc.

    2. Membership at local children's museum and keep going every week and spend ample time at a few of the exhibits instead of trying to cover them all. I learn so much from each exhibit. The exhibits are so well-thought out that I am in awe of how creatively physics/natural world is taught here in the US.

    3. Trip to a gurudwara or hindu temple or buddhist temple or any other congregation - during their chanting sessions or when they put up small shows of the local singing/dance class students - the music is so mesmerizing my kid doesn't want to leave well past meal time. :)

    4. Home depot free workshop for kids - one Saturday of every month. Kids earn a badge after successfully completing project and they go head over heels collecting those badges.

    5. Search for "winter science experiments for kids" on Pinterest - the choice is never ending and usually using available-at-home materials. Also gets them in to the kitchen.

@ILoveTulips you are doing amazing job . You are there for your kid physically and emotionally . That is what matters the most . Don’t be hard on yourself and don’t carry any guilt. Guilt will create havoc in our mind where we will start finding solutions which usually leads to more problems. It is absolutely normal to have a healthy and happy single kid .

Emptiness - What made you make this conclusion ? If you don't have anything positive to contribute why post some negative comments which by the way is absolutely incorrect.

ILT, I always like to read threads by Anika, Vedhavalli and others on topics to do with children under 10 or 12. Brings back such lovely memories. You wrote about telling Barbie or pony a story... suddenly I remembered my daughter at that age, gathering up all her Barbies and other toys, lining them up and playing teacher-teacher, or sometimes, talking to them like me... imitating my yelling, shouting and favorite statements like 'how many times do I have to tell you?', "I will put you in timeout..." "last warning.." Enjoy these years. They grow up so darned quickly.

The list of activities you do with your daughter is amazing in number and variety. Take many pictures and if possible write down a few sentences in a diary or something now and then.

Takes after the talented writer in mom. : )

BTW, I have read the first 4 episodes of Lizzy, Hannah.... Want to read the rest at one go. Saying here as if I post in thread, I will see the last few posts and get to know some "spoiler" bits.

So many great ideas ... makes me want just one more summer vacation or winter break with art work and science projects all over the dining table and family room floor.

I never let myself become in-charge of dispelling the boredom. There was a big plastic jar with a lid that the kid could open. This jar had about 20-25 folded notes (colorful post it's) in it with activity ideas. When kid came to me with an "I am bored" or "I don't know what to do..", I pointed to the jar. To avoid an endless taking out and putting back of the notes, there was a max of 2 she could reject at a time.

LOL to think of the stuff I bought... even a starter ant farm from Amazon : ) and half a pound of iron filings. This was before Amazon prime. : ) The ant house now stores rubber-bands and the iron-filings are still there. Can't bring myself to give them away.

Aww...what a bunch of feelings you have me behold with your simple descriptions. Is this domestic bliss, familial-love-and-longing - I wish I had more words! All I can say is... I lovvvvvve being a parent! :kissingheart: It's my first winter break without any travel plans with my (conversing-debating-full-of-energy) kid and I am so looking forward to it. Thank you for pumping up my holiday spirit. I wondered what the big deal with the count-down-to-christmas calendars was - I need one now!
