I enter the Indian store hoping to finish my weekly grocery shopping fast. A friendly Indian lady traditionally dressed once approached me asking about my whereabouts, I kind of felt weird talking to a complete stranger but then I just spoke to her without giving too many details and started asking her back the same questions. She said I looked stressed and is visiting USA to help people overcome marital and other issues through astrology. She tried giving me her visiting card which I refused citing that I don’t buy what she said. She was again after me to suggest her to my friends, I had to reply that I know none who are keen on such things. She seemed to be good at reading body language and I was glad that I got her off my back as I had too many things to tend to.

Often I find women at the Indian store approaching me. Most of them needing help in finding or recognizing something they need. These women are not newly married (who in general need help) but are usually with 2 school going kids or in their 50’s who are probably experts in cooking and shopping. I find some women steeling my shopping cart when I leave it on the side. When asked they either start to argue or come up with an excuse that the ingredients left in the cart are quite similar or simply blame it on their spouse even though they can clearly see my shopping bags in the cart they claim to be theirs. Someone just dumped my groceries on the side and stole my cart. This has been happening too many times and I wonder why people chose me or my cart.

I learnt my lesson to not leave my cart alone, ask my child to pick a few things while I shop on the other aisle and leave quickly.

    Interesting.
I have noticed that most Indian stores have very less shopping carts.
That's why the women could be taking your cart.

Yes I felt the same too especially when I shop on a busy weekend but the same thing happened at another Indian store where there are rows of empty carts lying outside the store. It’s quite strange.

Strange Veena! My only experience is people trying to cut off lines or one will be at the register checking out while a family member will still be shopping

You don't have to entertain the lady; be direct, polite but, be firm. You can tell something like - "I am sure you are a very good astrologer; but, I do not believe in it and I am not interested. As I really don't know you, I cannot recommend you to any one."
Do not give any personal contact info.

Yes it’s strange that’s why I felt like sharing it on IL not that it’s a problem that can’t be solved or feel stressed about. I in general smile a lot probably that attracts strangers. :)
Yes I have already done that. :)

Not just in Indian stores, even in American grocery store such things happen.
Recently when I had been to American grocery stores one American lady approached me. She was wearing some Army ID card tag. I wasn’t sure if it’s real but initially I freaked out. Later on she started talking about Jesus and Christianity
She even asked to visit some church and prayer service and get to know more about Jesus. I said ok and escaped somehow!
