‘Good Morning sir..’ the bunch of kids playing in the road saluted him and he nodded his head.

He is a part time teacher in the school though not officially. Post retirement he came back to his native village and found it tough to pass the time. He accidentally met the school principal who was having tough time with staffing problems and requested him to fill in. He didn’t think it as step-down accepted it immediately.

He took Physics for higher classes and was very strict as a teacher. Much to the annoyance of students, he is strict when it comes to discipline. Everyone in school was scared of him.

He was little away from reaching the temple where a boy of around two years crossed the road.

‘Sadayavarman..’ came a lady , who appeared to be the boy’s mother came running behind.

He stopped the bike and the lady who now carried the kid in her arms apologized and thanked him. The little boy was ready to jump from his mother’s arms.

‘That’s okay. What’s his name?’ he asked hoping he heard it wrong the first time.

‘Sadayavarman Gulasekaran..’ she said and started comforting the boy who was throwing tantrums.

‘I’m used to the look..people say it’s a weird name…My husband’s professor name and he insisted on keeping it..’

This cannot be a coincidence. He has rarely met someone with his own name and that too a professor . He went inside temple drenched with these thoughts..’

‘Sadayavarman Gulasekaran..’ His grandfather named him so. His reason was he was reading about Sadayavarman when the news of his grandson’s birth reached him without thinking grandson would be teased for such an odd name.

He still remember a new teacher came to the school and was asking for everyone’s name and when Sadayavarman said his full name he asked ‘That’s it or still there is some more left?’ It didn’t help matters shortened version of his name in the local language meant something to do with hair and he was mercilessly teased about it in his school days, might be all this hardened him.

‘Sir..please my father will not understand..’ a student from his school interrupted his thoughts.

‘This is not the place for it .move now..’ he barked. He found this student of class eleven in movie theater on a school day and ordered for his father to be brought to school.

He finished his prayers and was about to leave the school when the voice came again

    ‘Sir…’

‘Let’s talk about it in school..’ he turned around to see it wasn’t the school student. A uniformed police officer was standing before him.

‘You remember me sir? I was not your student but you were my invigilator during my final exams...’ he said.

    ‘I remember you..clearly..’

Sadayavarman remembered the day clearly. That was his last day at college. He had reached the retirement age after a well rewarding career and looking forward to settle back in his village. Though majority of students hated him for strictness, management valued him. College principal had huge respect for his words and used to praise him for honesty.

His memory was doing a throwback while doing the invigilation. Other staffs wandering in the corridor stopped to chat with him. A bell rand indicating it’s another 30 minutes and when he turned inside the classroom he noted him. The boy was rolling a paper and placing it in the socks, looking happy that he wasn’t caught yet. Sadayavarman calmly went near the boy and summoned him outside the class.

‘I don’t want to disturb others while they are writing, pull out that paper from your socks..’ he roared. He hated students giving silly excuses from turning in the assignments till going any extreme to pass in the exams than studying.

    ‘Sir , please ..’

‘What? We will go to Principal where he decides about you..You are the football team captain right? I heard about you..’

‘That’s right..but …sir believe I have no choice..I came through sports quota and I badly need this degree to get the job.. I’m weak in this paper..’ the student said in a low voice.

‘Then you should have studied hard..’ roared the professor.

‘We had the state tournament..I had to practice for better chance in jobs..sir please don’t report me..I’ll barred from writing exams..’ he pleaded hard.

In the next five minutes the student begged him not to turn him in explaining why he needed that degree to get the job and how his family is financially struggling. Sadayavarman wouldn’t have relented had it been his last day. Somewhere deep down the boy’s pleading touched him.

That minute principal was going rounds in the corridor and Sadayavarman thrusted the answer paper back into student’s hand’s gesturing him to sit. Student looked at him unable to believe and principal came around

    ‘What happened here?’ principal asked.

‘Nothing.his answer sheet flew out..’ Sadayavarman nodded towards his student. Student stayed back after the exams thanked Sadayavarman umpteen times and said he will strive to be honest henceforth.

‘You Sadayavarman..’ the mere mention of his name brought him to the present. The lady he saw in the road was running behind the kid.

‘Is that your kid?’ he asked the police officer standing before him. He couldn’t still come to terms that student who was once copying has become police officer.

‘Yes named after you..I don’t know what would have happened if you turned me in that day..That was the day I seriously owed myself to do something better..When the degree came in , I sat in for the police exam and now I’m an Inspector. I couldn’t reach to you earlier as I was posted in various places..,’ he held the professor’s hand and talked sincerely.

Professor Sadayavarman felt his heart becoming light as he met the small boy named after him. As he invited the family to his house for coffee, he saw the boy whom he caught in the theater lurking in the corner.

He smiled at the school boy and said ‘Let’s talk tomorrow.’, might be he will go easy on the boy.

Nice story and I loved it . Yes. Some lies may change other's life totally in a good way. I looked for who Sadayavaran was, why grand father had kept that name to professor after reading the whole story and known about king Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan/Sadayavaramban Sundara Pandyan:). My :worship2:to such a sincere/kind teachers and we rarely see that kind of student (who remember the kind gesture of teacher).
