There is a substantial literature on this subject. Here's a useful intro as a starting point.
Gender imbalances can fuel conflicts and revolutions.

If you have access to a good library, also see the paper below. Although I have it, I can't post the PDF here because of copyright.

A Surplus of Men, a Deficit of Peace: Security and Sex Ratios in Asia's Largest States

    1) female population reduces (or, surplus of men).
    2) inflation - more men competing for scarce resource, and thus violence?

    --

I was wondering why 'free market theory' didn't kick in and India becomes a country that treats it's woman as a precious gender; but then the pinch is felt only when their sons aren't getting a bride and the family gene has no ways to propagate.

A distortion is when high income families after a while decide to shop for bride from a lower economic status; this keeps happening down and as a result men at the bottom end - working class - don't get any.

This is in a way good for India - because it is usually the low economic strata that are the kid making factory which till now has prevented the country from putting it's economic growth into better quality of life.

    --

Thus violence on women will be from both 1) rich but who treat them as a commodity (the bride they 'bought' is having a mind of it's own!?) and 2) large swaths of men at the bottom end- active law & order will keep this in check.

as always, my 2 x 25 paise coin worth, coffee time thoughts.

Here is a narrative that can fix the problems of the surfeit of males.
    1. Family marries girl UP in status, as is the usual practice.
    2. Girl gets one or two babies, the usual abusive treatment, and after a struggle gets divorced.
    3. Divorced man has to marry further down than he did before; divorced woman with one or two babies would also have to marry down in status.
    4. Divorced woman finds a coop arrangement of marrying two fella's (good friends), like this sort: [IMG]
happy in each other's company, and sort of like hers as well. After a life of being an abused wife with one guy who had a "controlling interest" that petered out to mere "control", the woman would be happy with two guys with just a passing interest in her.
Polyandry with a twist. Or...for those who like market-parlance, this is merely moving from a sole proprietorship to a partnership with seat on the board.

    And everyone taken care of.

    no!
not when the ' perfect' gene is expected to yield more 'perfect' generations!
That would be a mere waste of investment...
