    Hi,
One of my friend had an MRI today for her leg. It's actually thigh area. During the MRI, they gave her only the foam ear buds(those small ones) to put in. And they also have headphone for music. But the music station didn't work today, so they didn't give her the headphones.
She just put on the foam ear buds. She had her scan for about 30minutes. She said the noise was very loud and hurts her ears. The foam plugs didn't help much.
Do anyone had their MRI without any ear protection like buds or plugs? Does it harm?
This was her first MRI. So she is freaking out here. She said one of her ears feels full and hurts. She also had sinus infection with fever recently. So, not sure if that's the reason for the ear pain.
I told her that it will be fine after sometime. Anyone have any inputs?

It was odd hat she declined to wear headphones, because there was no music in it. HP is given to patients to reduce the noise as well as provide them a diversion with music and instructions from the MRI-tech person. The next time, she should put on the headphones, and sing to herself (some mantra for meditation) if the radio isn't on. Noise reduction headphones (even without music in it) are good to use for MRI as well as airtravel.

MRI is just loud; it doesn't harm normal ears. She has had fluids move into one ear and bothered her. She should consult a doctor (and MRI tech) about the recent sinus infection, and what it would do while in the MRI cavity.

People are normally afraid of MRI because they are claustrophobic. The headphone is also used for instructions from the MRI tech to soothe the patient with feedback and encouragement. Eye patch, as much ear protection as offered, and setting mind to focus on something else are all useful in MRI.

Thank you so much for your reply. Appreciate it.
She didn't decline the headphones. They didn't give it to her. She didn't enquire about the sinus infection to the MRI tech before going for it. And it's not about claustrophobic. She is not inside the machine. Her upper body is outside the machine. The feet goes in first for thigh MRI.
She is regretting now that she went to MRI when she still down with cold and congestion. Ear fullness and pain is still there. Hope it resolves on its own.

    Live and learn.
MRI feels like some awful household movers are moving furniture, appliances, pots and pans, and dropping every item they carry, and do it all without any rhythm. Suddenly a big brass vessel will be dropped down the stairwell, and then someone will walk in high heels to go and pick it up, on the way hitting and caroming of some walls, and making thud noises. Sometimes the noise will happen upstairs, and then suddenly move into the basement. Someone will be trying to break the front door of the apartment next door. Beer cans and bottles will be tossed from a high balcony onto a cemented driveway.

Your friend should google and find out more about MRI experiences of others in blogs. MRI is also harmful to anyone with tattoos (tattoos may have used heavy metal ion containing colors, and they could interfere with magnetic fields in the cavity) and cause them extremely sharp pains where there are tatoos.

Thanks again for explaining about the noise the MRI make.
She is googling and Google shows scary stories. As always, Google gives a mixed stories. And she doesn't have any tattoos in her body.

An MRI won’t damage your ears. I don’t remember if I wore any headphones, but the claustrophobic feeling was the worst part of the procedure. Your friend is most likely feeling the effects of her sinus infection.

Thank you so much for the reply @MalStrom.
Did you have any MRI before? Did you wear the foam buds?
She doesn't feel claustrophobic since it was her thigh mri. So her upper body was outside the machine. I have heard that noise will be more when you are inside the machine than outside. How did you manage the noise without headphones?
Yeah. You may be right. Her sinus infection might cause the ear pain. Since it's paining after the MRI, she is thinking it's because of MRI noise.

No headphones were given (this is in India). Patients always come back mentioning about the loud sounds.

Thinking again- headphone has magnets. and it's an Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Won't they interfere?

Asking for a friend, of course. I don't need MRI as of now.

Do you work in MRI center? You say patients. Are you a medical person? So, what's given in India? Only the ear buds or nothing is given?
So, ear pain is normal after the loud sounds?

I really don't know if the magnets in headphones interfere with MRI. I am naive in this. I am not a medical person. Hope people who have knowledge about this can answer.
