This is what the American Psychiatric Association says:

    What is Telepsychiatry?
Telemedicine is the process of providing health care from a distance through technology, often using videoconferencing. Telepsychiatry, a subset of telemedicine, can involve providing a range of services including psychiatric evaluations, therapy (individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy), patient education and medication management.
    ...

    Evidence for Effectiveness
There is substantial evidence of the effectiveness of telepsychiatry and research has found satisfaction to be high among patients, psychiatrists and other professionals. Telepsychiatry is equivalent to in-person care in diagnostic accuracy, treatment effectiveness, quality of care and patient satisfaction. Patient privacy and confidentiality are equivalent to in-person care.

Any opinions or experiences on its effectiveness for individual therapy?

Looking for general inputs about telepsychiatry though the specific potential user is a 27-28 year old female in a remote University town in the U.S. Problem seems to be a combination of homesickness, love interest lost interest in her, and not sure of what next in her academic career. Like most of her generation, she is very tech-savvy and comfortable with video-conferencing.

I know someone that used this and thought it was beneficial. Studies have shown it is as effective as in person counseling.
I like the idea of sitting in my pajamas and pouring my heart out in the comfort and privacy of home .

Hey thanks Manisha. That's nice to read.

I am so behind the times, I initially thought telepsychiatry was hypnosis done remotely. : ) Makes sense that it is effective... people learn classical Indian music over Skype with teacher 8000 miles away.

A whatsapp video-call with her adult child (similar age group as your potential user), for dispensing e-hugs, admonitions, and advice, that could count as experience, no?

I think the long-distance counseling is effective. otherwise, there'd be no repeat customers:

When in college for a few years, it is plausible that young people might become "a couple", and eventually graduation happens in an uneven fashion, letting one of them graduate earlier than the other. Job offer to the graduate results in separation, and separation causes loss of "interest" from one or both parties.

Getting a new, replacement interest, is one way to get out of this anguish. However, this takes time, a new location/situation, and in many cases, a little bit of luck.

Pairing up "with commitment" happens only after people feel confident about their finances -- i.e., have a job, with sufficient income, and feel that it is all tenable for a reasonable length of time.

Love interests, and serious academic careers seem to run in contradictory paths. There was a reference by @startinganew to the two body problem in astrophysics in describing matters of the heart (brain?) among academics. Link.

Of course that counts. : ) What is a parent who is not also almost a psychiatrist by the time the child is old enough to deliver grandkids. : )

    True!

Thank you for the perspective, Amulet. This young lady has hinted that the topic is now off-limits. Hopefully, it is due to time being the healer/patcher and her getting busy with academic work.

Foreign students doing Ph.D. also get that "what's the point of it all?" feeling now and then. However, unlike a local student, the FS had usually come much farther, with a lot more burnt bridges in the past. This makes it conducive for faster healing from whatever that ails them. I cannot find the link to the information now, but it is there somewhere, that shows that local students drop out a lot easier, because the alternatives do not include illegal-presence and/or departure from the country. They may also move back with "the folks".

Grad School professors prefer those who'd have less propensity to drop out, and more likely to continue to completion.
