    Desire is Not Bad.

Let me first of all clarify that ‘Desire’ is all inclusive. It is not limited to ‘wants or longing’. As per ‘thesaurus.com’, Desire has many synonyms- inquisitiveness, eagerness, inclination, lust, craving, ambition, appetite, aspiration, devotion, fascination, greed, hunger, love, motive, need, passion, thirst, will, wish, yearning, admiration, ardor, attraction, avidity, concupiscence, craze, cupidity, doting, fancy, fervor, fondness, frenzy, hankering, infatuation, itch, lasciviousness, lechery, libido, liking, mania, prediction, proclivity, propensity, rapaciousness, relish, salacity, solicitude, urge, voracity….It is a noun as well as a verb.

In my assessment, I may say that following may be taken with a pinch of salt. We have been conditioned to believe that the reason for our miseries is our desire. Whoever said that did not perhaps know that our energy equals our desire. The acuteness of pure desire gives a boost to our energy. Every desire has a purpose. Desire is not bad.

It may seem odd but it is true. Even the energy to know about the Unknown is fueled by the acuteness of the desire. If the desire was not there, why would our saints and sages be wandering into the difficult terrain of Himalayan Hills? It was the pressing desire that fueled their energy. Days without food and nights without sleep, blisters on the feet and the journey continued. But for this energy, fuelled by the acuteness of their desire, we would have been deprived of the wealth of knowledge they recorded in our scripts. Desire is not bad.

Wright Brothers fell many times on the ground endangering their lives before they could fly.
Dashrath Manjhi made a road with a chisel and hammer thru the hill so that no one died without treatment like his wife because there was no road from his village to the hospital on the other side of the hill. Desire is not bad.

There are hundreds of examples to justify desire. Without desire life would not have been as comfortable as we find it today.

There is other side of the coin also. However, on a impartial balance, the head side outnumbers the tail side.

    Dear Hari Sir,

We are all born with desires without which our life would have never happened. As long as thoughts exist, desires also will exist and as long as we have consequences of our actions encrypted, we will continue to have thoughts. Our goal is to discriminate and regulate them as desires are endless. We can only find the origin but never the end of it. We shake the soda bottle and then remove the lid, most of soda will be out in the open pretty quickly. We can try to have ceiling on desires and handle our desires with care and diligence. When we convert our selfish desires into one of that selfless desires, they become part of the common good of the humanity. When name and fame comes as part of our contributions, it doesn't bite us.
Even at home, when we diligently focus our attention to help our family members, our demeanor changes forever in the right direction.

Growth happens when most of our desires become transparent and well received by people around us.

    Dear Shri Viswa,
Thanks for your valued comments. Yes there are good and bad desires. It takes time to know what is good and what is bad because everyone has his own weighing machine. Experience tells the difference. In the intervening period anything may happen.
Another problem is tending to good desires is not fashionable or practical. We tend to take shorter route to reach our destination. The end justifies the means.
But then, without desires, which as you rightly said, is inborn, nothing is possible. Maybe it is necessary to take the risk for greater good.
Just yesterday an Ashram was raided in Chennai and loads of currency both Indian and foreign, and gold and diamonds were found. I guess this guy might have started the ashram with good intentions but lost the track on the way.
And there was Valmiki, a robber, who turned into a sage.
Pitfalls apart, desires are not bad, provided........????????
