Recently I posted about acrylic nails at the Nail Biting Thread: How To Stop Nail Biting?

Those who have had their dentist put in a filling or patch up a ditch on the side of a tooth would have sniffed that odd smell of acrylic material. For the teeth, the material is applied in its liquid(y) form, the dentist semi-cures it to a clay, shapes it and then s(he) cures it fully, then grinds off the unwanted edges to make the tooth seem as close to "normal" as possible. These acrylic dental composite fillings are pretty close to the same color as a tooth. Special color matching is also done at higher prices. Amalgum fillings had gone out of style, because of the heavy metal contaminations they had caused in the past.

The synthetic nails are a cousin of the tooth fillings. In this case, the resin is completely cured in its final shape, and sent off to the nail salons in the shapes that the manicurist can simply adhesively attach to the existing nail surface, and then shape it a little. The manicurist doesn't use the dentist's expensive grinding tools, but something similar from a hardware store.

The phrase "tough as nails" should be modified for use in nail salons: "tough as dental fillings". These nails are quite tough, and very acid and bacteria resistant. Natural teeth is susceptible to acid damage, whereas the fillings are not.

Old guy suggests wandering around, looking at people and things. Especially gawking at other people in restaurants, and wondering what they are upto. And then follows that, "see something, say something" edict. Write it all down, he says.

It would be tough to live in a touristy city.

Good response. Any thread asking for people's opinions on a common experience, or asking how they go about that task or how they approach that common relationship situation is simply that: "asking people's opinions." It is human to be curious about others' take on things. If we find something in the responses that strikes us as useful, we might try to apply that in our own life.

This stunned me, @Amulet. I love this!! What an idea! You always have out-of-box answers for every question here. But somehow I assumed it is your persona in IL. This really got me thinking. It looks like IL is an extension of your real persona (this sounds obvious when I write it now). I'd say (and I can't stop smiling when I imagine) - you'd be be such a cool parent - giving your kids all sorts of fun solutions to problems. :D

@Rihana You clean the bathroom of this particular guest after every use - I bow to thee.
I've run your question in my mind since you asked - It makes me feel like such an impatient and terrible host. :grinning:

I get all hot when a visiting guest walks away from the dinner table and doesn't "offer" to put their plate in the sink or even the load the dish-washer (especially if they are in my age range and know how these things work). (Not the previous gen elder guests for whom I don't mind doing that) And here you are being such a kind and awesome host. I'd have thrown up my arms and not been willing to host someone who requires so much work.
I am not at all saying - why are you doing this. I am just saying, it makes me try to be a better person. So, thank you for sharing this. :relaxed:

I can side-step that response if it were from someone else. In this case, I’ll write a reply, but that has to be on PM. Laters.

Ragini, a thread like Vedhavalli's above has scope for interesting inputs from people. Even if the topic was discussed earlier, we get responses from newer members or now-wiser-from-life's-vicissitudes older members. It takes some effort to start a thread, read responses, respond to all or some, click Likes. A response like yours essentially says that the thread's question is moot, "it varies, so why inquire", and becomes a damper on the thread. Now, you do have total freedom of speech, expression and all that good free world stuff to post what you want to post, and other have the ability to read and scroll past your post. But, it would be a nicety to not thus kill a thread even before it gathers momentum.

I have experienced this in the past when I was a more prolific poster, perhaps in the "to Kumon or not" phase of my life. : ) Many such thread-damper posts in threads I started used to be from you.

Would it kill you to not be a kill-joy sometimes?

This is going to be disputed in email to me ! My IL forum ID is known to all at home. Occasionally one of them peeks in here to browse what I had done.

If you want to give category labels for my posts, so be it Rih. Your perspective of it, I respect that freedom of speech.
