I apologize if my post below offends anyone on this forum or seems judgemental.

I am a long time member of this forum, silent initially and then more active. This forum and its members have been a sounding board for when I had some major issues . For that, I am immensely grateful.

However, in recent times I have been a little surprised about the content of posts and responses. I am particularly taken aback about posts/responses about superstitions, black magic etc. More surprising is the lack of questioning of these beliefs from any of the members.

I don’t claim to be more modern or broad minded but I think as a society we could benefit more if there is more questioning of blind faith and practices that do not have any logical explanation.

Thanks for hearing me out .

The questioning can happen and does happen in separate "generic" threads, where the topic can be discussed without a member's personal situation being dissected. In a member's thread about such practice, it is better to stick to giving helpful advice and not question the practice.

Quite a few practices have been discussed in such generic threads. So, there is not really a lack of questioning. I recall active discussion threads on sitting aside on those days of the month, karva chauth fast, etc.

In addition, this forum aims more for bonhomie and being helpful to members, rather than strong discussion on topics like faith, superstition. This is my impression from over the years. Or, over the <gulp> decade. : )

    Dear @SinghManisha

I know that you are referring to my posts here. Of course I am ashamed of posting my inner problems to a bunch of unbelievers who can never relate to what I am going through.
In fact, I have posted the same query now and even before in other forums too. They are predominantly western people of majority Christian faith. Even some Jews and Muslims responded there.
It is very clear that they could very much relate to the evil thing in my thread, and were able to give me the right guidance of how to get rid of them.
But only Desi forums could relate to my relationship problems, and the emotions that are interlinked to all the evil matters in my thread. Hence I posted here as well.

Since I posted, so many Lites have responded me through PM, instead of openly replying in that thread. That itself shows their fear of judgement though it is an anonymous forum.

    Let me tell you clearly.....

A year before I encountered this BM/witchcraft problem in my life, I too was like you. I needed scientific evidence to believe or not to believe anything. I was very much ignorant about this, and felt only those who are uneducated, or uncultured will follow these.
In fact, I did not know it was mentioned in the Holy bible and Holy Quran and in the Holy Torah very clearly. It was my lack of knowledge that I later realized.
Perhaps, it is because I lived in Sri Lanka, where it is predominantly Buddhist and Hindus, who don't believe in BM/Witchcraft - or, those who believe and practice these are liers or uneducated. Thus, I was not able to connect myself with them.
Being born and raised in a metro city, and lived and studied in the west, and working almost across the continent with the United Nations in a powerful position, I could not match myself to those not-so educated pandits, and gurus who spoke these matters. I brushed them off as superstitions.

In fact, I did not have any reason to investigate all this until I was personally challenged with that.

After my personal encounter only, I've resorted to the Holy bible, and found the answers for myself.
Here are some quotes which I found from internet to prove the existance of BM/Evil powers in the world through Holy bible, (and other 2 holy books of Abrahmic religions). And FYI, majority of the world population is following these 3 religions; hence believing whatever written in them (including BM) no matter what the world say about it.

2 Chronicles 33:6: He sacrificed his children in the fire in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, practiced divination and witchcraft, sought omens, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, arousing his anger.

    Galatians 5:19-20: The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions

James 4:7: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Revelation 20:10: And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

I knew from my last encounter that Indusladies is not the place for this kid of discussions, since your world is limited to whatever majority of you believe in. It doesn't matter.
That's why this time, my posts were not predominantly about BM or its affect. But the issues in the family.

IL is the only place where I could vent and search opinions for all these complex problems of my life. If not, I would have left IL long back with these kind of judgmental posts.

Externalizing a cause of misery is a way to retain sanity.

It works only if such troubles last for a specified time and/or the individual becomes strong to withstand that.

IL observations should include the massive amounts of fiction content.
I am totally impressed with those who write serials. Amazing stuff.
I learn much from the themes, and the underlying mores of behavior in the society. For someone long absent from desh, that genre that IL supports is a very useful educational tool.

    Dear Manisha ,

This is my thought on your question.
If you observe the trend in this forum not everyone responds to every query that is posted. We read, we think, try to relate to the problem and share our thoughts. Or we read and skip that thread if we cannot relate to it. When we share our thoughts we also go for further probing like ask few more details to give a better reply to OP or understand the problem better.

Coming to the topic you have mentioned all we can do is either ignore to reply there (if we don't believe in such practices) or give our inputs in an assertive manner if at all we feel yes our inputs will help OP. Some try humour which may or may not be acceptable to OP.

When someone posts such topics it's better to keep our questioning to ourselves about the entire practice itself in that particular thread . Questioning more is like rubbing on the wound of OP. No inputs, just wish them well or move on to next thread. Have inputs share with them that's it.

Just like some believe in a super power called "God" some also believe in other supernatural(unnatural), blind, superstitious beliefs/pratices etc.

Unless the forum restricts on discussion on such topics I see no harm one supporting/not questioning such discussions.

    Regards,
    Anusha

In a recent post from a child* in the "puja & sloka" kind of forum, about the kinds of prayers one ought to engage in, for snagging a good match to marry, there were lots of interlopers offering non-sloka-puja responses. Mea culpa.

Be that as it may, we never see which sub-forum a post is in before diving in with opinions. Do we?

If someone posts "I need a fresh fish" in some forum that is non-culinary, we'd still jump in to tell the IL-member that she needs to make eye-contact and see how fresh the fish is.

Vegetarians can avoid the whole issue by refusing to look up and make eye contact with dead fish.

I remember posting an indignant post a few years back in a thread about nosepins.

The thread had women telling a young woman who had been physically forced to pierce her nose by mil
to enjoy wearing the nosepin because blah blah culture and traditions.
I think it was posted in the culture section ...
Later reaslised my ranting was misplaced because being forced to do stuff is an integral part of our culture and traditions.

Since then I try to see the subforum heading before posting.
I forgot to do so in the young woman asking for fasting advice and thought it was part of the relationship forum.

Now I try not to respond to things I do not believe in other subforums.

In any forum there are 2 types of people. One who is genuinely looking for help and the other one is a fake person who cooks up stories which can be identified easily most of the times.

Now coming to sentimental beliefs like God, religion, superstition etc, there are many ILites who can relate to those beliefs and post or suggest accordingly.

And there are some Ilites who think the post is irrelevant to their sentiments / beliefs so they ignore them without causing more hurt to the OPs sentiments.
