Yes, it is painful and there is sometimes a burning sensation. As long as it is only when the procedure is done, I think it is fine - write it down to doctor's skill and your pain threshold.

If I am fine by the time I am outside, not walking weirdly : ) and smiling as the receptionist says have a good day, I count it as an OK visit.

@Rihana yeah I had burning pain and was wincing during the procedure. It reduced to discomfort after I left the clinic. I felt totally ok by the end of the day.

thank you ladies :) Looks like this pain is somewhat expected and normal going by your accounts.

    Hi everyone.

I realize this is an old thread but oh boy am I glad to have found this post. I underwent this scan and had sharp pain when the probe was inserted. I screamed and refused the scan. I even suggested maybe there is some problem down there because I was assured that the scan would cause no pain. Nurse and doctor coaxed me to relax and bear the pain. God only knows how I bore the pain and complied. Once inside, the probe didn't cause pain. Again while removing it, there was pain. After that I am normal except for burning sensation which lasted a couple of hours. Phew! I pray to God not to take woman birth again.

I felt doubtful that maybe I have some health issue which caused the pain. Scan report came normal. Anyway glad to know that I am not the only person on the planet who had such experience. Thank you ladies.

Always ask to insert the US probeyourself. Most doctors comply as far as I have seen.

It is probably because you were nervous and clamped down and they used force. It hurts the delicate tissue around there and leaves a burning feeling until later. Plus, did they use lubricant on the probe?

    Hi

Thanks for your response. I am not confident of inserting it myself. So that option is not there for me. Once I yelled in pain, I noticed the doctor added lubricant gel and then tried the 2nd time, which was half painful compared to the first attempt. I also feel the transducer used was quite fat, compared to the images I see in Google. I don't know. I have the second scan today and I am praying to bear the experience.

I had my second scan today. It was much better and was very quick. Pain was 25% only. The transducer was loaded with gel :p

I agree that the first time the doctor was rough in handling. Would have appreciated a delicate handling for invasive procedures. People don't smile at you, or chat with you to put you at ease. They themselves are preoccupied with getting the work done quickly maybe. We need more thoughtful and kind doctors.
