Kudos to madam sister for meticulous wearing of a Beautiful saree with its warp & weft perfect in its overall size . I enjoyed reading every bit of it. I am Glad in particular to note that you were satisfied wearing numerous sarees of different designs and wore it to “heart’s content ” which itself is a rare event.

2. I remember my staff seek permission to go early to buy sarees and discuss anddisplay their recent purchase of saree during lunch hour. Your post quite nostalgic in the sense how my mother used to hand wash her only two or three sarees preserve with piece of kerchief knotted with napthaleen balls stuffed into it in the steel cupboard.

3. It could be six or nine yards but each becomes beautiful when worn in different style including the traditional madisaru.

My sister corrected me once, when I commented that in a particular saree I presented (purchased from my first salary) she looked beautiful. From then on I used to say “this saree looks beautiful On your person”.

4. It is always a delight to see and watch spouse on festival and vradh days going around about her religious and mundane chores when she dons that maroon mhurtha saree 9 yards divided between her legs with its phallu encircle her waist and tucked in nicely.

5. Though it is said beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, yet majority thinks that they look more beautiful and aesthetic only when they drape in latest and trendy sarees.

6. To buy a saree one must have an eye for details. When they go with spouse on shopping for Saree, seldom they think of their partner sitting in a corner in profound sleep or busy typing to post in Indus Ladies.

7. Some prefer to go with their siblings and take care to embellish themselves to command respect and remain attractive so that the shop salesman attentive to cater to their preferred style design choice of sarees.

8. Person desires to be attractive and so choose their attire either in saree or churidhar or in lehengas or in trousers, full Suit etc., But a crescent by itself is not so beautiful as when Lord Nataraja or Goddess Kamakshi wears it.

9. Out of curiosity, I as a boy, tried wearing my mother’s (new) saree. My mother was seen always quick to wear saree and ready to move with her friends out so fast, I used to wonder how does that she wears saree 6 or 9 so fast with symmetrical folded pleats in front. Once I came out wearing a new saree out from trial room imitating ladies in fashion parade to delight mother and sister & of course other onlookers.

10. Many a times with spouse & I, used to revisit the shops at TT Dadar kabudhar khana in then Bombay. For exchange of sarees purchased previous day and to avoid
Lengthy arguments and embarrassing moments to shop staff , we used to be at the shop as soon as they open it. It facilitates Quick exchange in the absence of other buyers and mission accomplished without any hassle.

11. For better selection in a relaxed pace, spouse used to be ready in the morning itself to set out for saree or any other substantial buys like jewellery.

12. I could not write this FB in one go, as there were many interruptions the last one being the Vadhiyar (home priest) dropped in with his engineering daughter Nandini for handing over Poonal - sacred thread- for Yajur Avani Avittam to be performed on Independence Day. Their presence delighted my spouse and I, as daughter Nandini was attired in silk Saree in madisaru.

13. When my spouse asked her any special reason, she said whenever I drive scooter with appa on vaideeka duty ( professional duty) , I am comfortable in this madisaru attire.
14. In the yore of days, beautiful sarees cotton or silk - my mother at door stepsused to exchange with stainless steel containers or plastic wares after long hours of haggling and revisits of those vendors.

It is quite interesting to read about Viji's interest in sarees and
how much care and attention she has in selecting and preserving.Equally interesting was the elaborate response from Shri Thyagrajan Sir based on his practical experience.
In very big families with financial strain, even to think of more than two
dresses was out of reach.'One dress will be on you body, the other one on the
cloth string( onru idaiyil ,matrathu kodiyil)The third one,some what new ,
will be for occasions.
My husband's grandfather used to buy a long piece
of cloth in ration shop and give to all his grand children.Whether paavadai( skirt)
or blouse, half pant or shirt had to be stitched out of the same cloth. Thatha
never cared about the remark'Trade mark' and the children could never open the
mouth since he was the guardian for fatherless kids.
The tendency not to spend on too many sarees became a habit
in me.,though money is not a constraint anymore.My daughter has got a few collections.My son doesn't bother.

There is no second opinion reg the fact the dress boosts one's confidence.
'AAl paathi, Aadai Paathi' is a Tamil saying.Who can forget the girl seeing
ceremony in every home,a test of selection/rejection-the trend continuing even
today.?My brother-in-law wanted to see the girl without any make up in a voil saree
so that he could judge properly.

We make snap judgments about people from the clothes they wear. On what basis?
From the dress ,they say, it is possible to judge a person as confident, successful, flexible etc.,though the impression is actually unfounded.
Like it or not, how we dress has a huge effect on how people see us.
Things like the color, cut, and style of the clothes we wear - and even our accessories - communicate loudly. But the way we dress also affects how we see ourselves.

That’s a very nice sentiment but in our cynical, competitive world, it is a very rare occurrence for someone not to make impressions of you based on how you look initially.
My friend used to be a sloppy dresser. She never liked the idea that she had to dress a certain way to get the respect she thought she deserved or get people to listen to her. She felt that people should respect her because of her innate merits and not because of what she wears. . But later because
of the practical realities she had to change completely.Now she says that dress sense falls under the broader category of non-verbal communication.
Dress up well. Not for others. But for you to feel good.
May be no one will notice you.. But the mirror always does.!
Ninety-five years ago on 22nd September 1921, Gandhi made a momentous decision to change his attire. From the elaborate Gujarati attire, he decided on a simple dhoti and shawl. This epoch-making decision was taken by Gandhiji in Madurai after he decided that he had to work for and with the poor people of India and how he could identify with them if he wore different clothes from them. He stuck to this dress code even on his trip abroad and until his very last moment! And he never regretted his decision as he writes:

“All the alterations I have made in my course of life have been effected by momentous occasions; and they have been made after such a deep deliberation that I have hardly had to regret them. And I did them, as I could not help doing them. Such a radical alteration — in my dress, — I effected in Madura.”

But all cannot become Mahathmas.

I do not know much about sarees except that they made a big hole in my pocket but it is a fact that Late Sushma Swaraj used to wear sarees of a particular color on each day on each of week.

 

A comprehensive portrayal of dress universe and sartorial sense aesthetically revealed in the days of yore and now. Hats off to you madam sister. (I marvel at your energy, sense of humour and your strong urge to respond even as late as in night past 11.30)

Yes. During those days I used to see a banner in a Taylor shop, “God makes man: Taylor makes gentleman”
