There is a massive difference between governing and acting like a theatre producer coming up with a spectacle now and then that awes , elates , or scares the people. The present ruling dispensation has been playing the showman rather than the king in the last five years.

First they come up with a spectacle called DEMONETIZATION that knocks down the entire nation flat , leads to the death of nearly 150 people in bank queues and serves no other purpose.. Then they make a song and dance out of a SURGICAL STRIKE across the border as if, there had been no cross-border operations before.

Of course then came the Phulwama suicide attack and we responded with the air strike. This is understandable. Unlike governments (Except perhaps ours) terrorists tend to think like showmen putting up fierce destructive spectacles to strike terror into people’s minds and to respond to them you have to play the showman too. So the airstrike was needed . Even if you didn’t drop a single bomb you have to give the impression that you did to keep people’s morale high. Feku-ing is often necessary for governance but playing feku itself cannot be governance.
That precisely what our rulers are doing now. On the J&K issue. On a “Historical” day Home Minister Amit Shah waddles into parliament where after praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hilt for improvement of the situation in the insurgency-torn state as never before , lifting the curtains the latest spectacle put up by these theatre producers sorry government: Abrogation of Article 370 and 35-A of the constitution granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcation of the state into two union territories.

Now, I am no fan of these two articles. I think its restrictions prevented the state;s development with no outside investments coming in to create jobs and make the state rely on tourism and handicrafts . It is also anti-women as it prevents them from inheriting property if they marry outside the state. These articles, frankly shouldn’t have been there at all but the shortsightedness of onr Jawaharlal Nehru ensured thst theu were incorporated into the constitution.

But their revoking would cause more problems than we had earlier at this juncture. You can put a lid on the problemas bu massive deployment of troops but how long can you continue like this?
The government has tied itself up in contradictions. If the situation has improved as never before how come they are not conducive to holding assembly elections? That means they have not improved. That is the bitter truth. Even government figures show that more people including armymen, paramilitary troopers and civilians have been killed from 2914 to 2018 than ever before. So the situation has either improved or not improved. You can’t have it both ways., guys//
Now if the situation has improved, there is no need for turning the state into two u nion territories. By acceding to this the parliament has accepted a dangerous principle: That parliament can legislate to decide the fate of any state to alter their status and reshape them.

This will only increase resentments and fuel increased violence in the Kashmir valley. And more youth could be lured to the cause of separatism.
Granted you can fight violence with the might of the state but how do you fight the idea thart engenders violence? You need another, stronger idea. The idea of total unity with India would have been a stronger one if only the government has got its act together.
. Let us not be blind to the fact that what is happening in the rest of India would impact on Kashmir. And what is happening in rest of India is not exactly a great ad for such a unity. Let us not forget that India’s largest minority community is the majority community in Kashmir.
The atmosphere of fear and uncertainty spread among the community in many parts of the country is not going to strengthen Kashmir’s links with India. Every Akhlaq, Pehlu or Junaid killed in the charge of the cow brigade weakens Kashmiri’s faith in India and gives the impression this is no country for minorities.

And parroting that what we do to J&K is an internal affair really does not help. Get real guys, part of Kashmir is under Pakistani occupation and even from that a slice has gone to China which also has its eyes oin part of Ladakh. How does that make it an internal problem? Saying we will keep demanding Pak occupied Kashmir is hilarious. If you keep demanding at one stage Islamababad will get tired and ha nd it over, is it?
And for those supporting the government’s move, stop getting euphoric. The move is a part of the problem, not part of the solution. And the home minister puts up a brave face refusing to talk to the separatists. “We will only talk to the people”. And how will people communicate with you? You will not hold a referendum, will you?

    Hi Balajee,

while I am happy that the articles 370 and 35A have been removed, nobody is deluding oneself in the belief that all is going to be smooth sailing hereon. Right now peace prevails because the trouble makers and the ordinary citizen is locked up and cannot create trouble. How long can this situation continue? Some day the curfew will have to be lifted. What happens after that will have to be seen. But is that a good enough reason to do nothing about it?

Is the present government taking good decisions? Some are good, some not so good. But mistakes can be made only when there is some action. If they don't do anything, they can never go wrong. That is what we as a country have been used to all along. The inaction of the govt in the face of 9/11 is one example. We turned the other cheek. Did that help in any way?

International opinion will be against India who will be termed 'occupiers and aggressors'. But that is not surprising. Pakistan is always the 'victim' despite all the cross border terrorism, insurgency and the umpteen times they violate the cease fire. That is alright. Kashmir throws out Pandits out of their homes, that is fine. They are not victims. They deserve it solely by virtue of being born to their faith. The highly 'concerned international community' was in a drugged stupor when these people were coming to other states as refugees, having lost all their property and homes. That was very secular and these people had no claim to human rights. Human rights are the sole claim of those who pelt stones. The same Farooq Abdullah who shed tears saying "India belongs to everybody" seems to have been playing Nero to the valley when this ethnic cleansing happened under his nose. That time Kashmir was India, but Kashmir did not belong to the Kashmiri Pandits. "We have a right to all the benefits of being Indians, but don't expect us to reciprocate in any manner whatsoever". These were the permanently entitled jamaais of India. They have had the cake, eaten it too and want to continue to do so for all eternity.

While secularism is a highly desirable principle for any state to practice, it cannot only apply to one set of people. It is not as if Kashmir has not been besieged by endless violence. What has happened today is the outcome of years of pseudo-secularism on one hand and constant provocation by our esteemed neighbours.

Certainly this is a case of opening a can of worms and we can argue about how it should have been done till the cows come home. I am no constitutional or legal expert and can only listen to different people saying different things - what is the truth, I don't know. What the consequences of this action will be, we do not know. "Karmanyevaadhikaaraste, maa phaleshu kadaachana". To my mind there were only two alterntives: do nothing about it and leave things alone OR do something about it, no matter what the consequences. However it was done, there would be no escaping consequences. The only sad part is that there are no winners in political games and unfortunately this is all about politics. Am sure, other than the separatists, the ordinary citizen of Kashmir is just like you and me - wanting to live in peace. But that is the sad reality of politics and politicians, isn't it? Who cares about the ordinary people or their fate?

The problem was ordinary people were prevented from electing their state legislature by bringing down the previous elected govt mid term and preventing elections. All the progress in tourism in last decade has gone to gutters now.

The right procedure would be to get majority in state legislature and then do away with the 370.

Allow ordinary people to come out and voice their the opinion not just lock them up and impose .As it is looks like 370 has been chipped away slowly , so no great urgency to remove it in this manner.

The only beneficiaries as usual will be few business men who will get land for throwaway prices because no other ordinary citizen would go and buy land until insurgency is reduced.

Just imagine being locked up in your homes while fate of your state is being decided.

:hello: Kudos to your post reflecting your national spirt and spirited analysis and question the irrational reasons of the Modi office for bifurcation into UTs.

    2. Whatever reasons for causing this state of affairs is only for public consumption. The need seems to have arisen or originated as a fall out of tweets of Trump that mr. Modi met him in side lines of that international meet in a neutral nation Requesting to mediate and very next day a diplomat from PENTAGON flown to Afghanistan to meet present Taliban chief about new axis of China - pak- Afghanistan.

    3. Some strategic thinking in New Delhi and in camera meet. Hence the strategic move. It might turn to be a surgical preventative plan!

    4. In his article in the Hindu dated Wednesday, Aug 7, 2019 mr. luv puri the author of “in line of control” has analysed the need and its aftermath of declaring the voidance of statehood to J& K And converting them as bifurcated states. A wonderful apposite views.
    Thanks & Regards.
God bless the Nation India also known as BHARAT.

I foresee a saffronization of Kashmir along with a beef ban in the valley. The likes of Yogi Adityanath / sadhvi Pragya etc can now buy land there and build temples. Who knows, maybe lord Rama descended on Kashmir first.

You can't take any action Satchi without pondering over possible consequences. Here not just a can of worms has been opened but a NEST OF ANGRY HORNETS HAS BEEN DISTURBED. We just can't find an escape route in Gita. The decision is shortsighted taken on narrow political considerations after BJP's strategy od aligning with Sajjad Lone and attempt to engineer defections from PDP failed miserably. As a union territory the state will be in the grip of BJP govt in Delhi. They have the tiger by tail and can't leave it. Can they withdraw the extra security forces ? Toi keep the state calm they can't. Already the advwrse effects are showing. Because of communication clampdown people are not even avle to call emergency services like Ambulances.

arumummy absolutely. If the government's claim is true that situation is a lot better than ever before, they should have had no hesitation in holding elections. Instead the entire state is put under curfew, pilgrims and tourists are unceremoniously kicked out of the state The move will not benefit businessmen either. Who would want to invest in an insurgency ridden state? The move has not ended insurgency, it will only fuel it.
