Who should be held responsible for the present vagaries of society?

We find fault with movies for implanting poisonous seeds in the minds of the viewers to indulge in immoral and unethical ways of living. Real episodes of Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, and the latest one VG Siddhartha are good feeds for film producers. It is not the question of who spoils whom – whether the producers corrupt the mind of the public and turn some of them as criminals by spinning stories resulting out of their fertile imagination or the entrepreneurs such as the above sow the poisonous seeds to grow unbridled on the imagination of story writers. Whether fiction to realism or realistic events lead to fiction is a moot point for discussion. I am reminded of a song with beautiful lyrics of great Kannadasan :

    kodi asaindhdhadhum kaatru vandhdhadhaa?

    kaatru vandhdhadhum kodi asaindhdhadhaa?

Did the breeze come, when the flag waved?

Did the flag wave, when the breeze came?

Most of these seasoned business magnates or the first time entrepreneurs lead such a luxurious and lavish style of living with many admirers and chamchas behind them till the bubble pricks and bursts.

CCD owner was one who belonged to such category. It was reported:

“The 58-year old first generation coffee entrepreneur hailed from a coffee growing family in Chikmagalur in Karnataka. A post-graduate in Economics, the family is the largest individual coffee planter, owning about 15,000 acres of coffee estates. Over the course of more than two decades, Siddhartha built a java empire that now boasts more than 1,700 stores -- ten times as many outlets as Starbucks Corp in India -- as well as 54,000 vending machines, almost single-handedly introducing his tea-loving country to coffee shops and making his Cafe Coffee Day chain a household name. But what was less known was that for all his company’s scale and ubiquity, Siddhartha struggled with a mounting financial burden.”

Though on his death, never ending encomia showered on him that he was a noble soul, “humble human being who didn’t mind chartering a flight to attend weddings and funerals of loved ones. From his office at CCD Square, he would escort friends personally to the lift and the lobby, which is unheard of from billionaires”.

But what drove him to this extreme step? Was it cowardice, humility, or pressure? Nothing of this kind – it was nothing short of greed, improper planning and analysis of different situations and changing trends, extensive indulgence wearing too many hats and biting more than what he could chew, celebrity status, misguidance and untrustworthy people around including family members, over confidence on account of high level influence and connections with politicians, bureaucrats in government, and last but not the least the bankers who could easily succumb to a person of his stature. A couple of years back, we had only one Mallya; as days pass by we will have many more.

Whatever it was, it is sad. Probably this is the first case in living memory that such drastic action was taken by a businessman of his stature, particularly when his assets are more than the liabilities. We do not know yet. There might have been some really compelling reason.

A striking example of modern day woes, greed for expansion beyond one's capacity outside and shrinking gradually inside...is that comes to my sad mind.

What has happened to Siddharth is very sad. He being in india , creating employment opportunites for the localities and being a very down to earth person says it all about him. Its very very unfortunate.

It is very sad.Whatever be the reason assumed, the end result is heart breaking. As long as one is in the victory path, no one analyses the background.Once there is a serious slip of this magnitude, public should be aware of precautions. One has to learn from others' failures also.

Mallya choksi and Nirav Modi are just a few tyop dogs amonhg the moneybags who exited from India after looting banks in the name of taking massive loans. Studies have shown many millionaires and billionaires are leaving the country probably after swindling banks. Sidhartha's tragedy is that he was not able o do a Mallya.

    Dear Smt. Jayasala:

When we were in India this time in April, we were running around a lot within the city due to various reasons. We rent a car and the driver told us that he would take us to Coffee Day as my wife was suffering from headache. We didn't know anything about Coffee Day. When we visited one in RAPuram, Chennai, we found out a very enterprising woman was managing the cash counter and making coffee simultaneously with a smiling face. We have a good coffee and my wife was all praise for the coffee offered.

Later, I came to know it was a chain similar to Starbucks in the US and are doing extraordinarily well. Japanese entrepreneurs kill themselves if they are unable to pay their debts back. It looks like they have so much self-pride when they default loan payments. It is sad situation that they give up instead of continuing to make an effort to set the business straight.

People like Vijay Mallya are the ones we need to be worried about. They feel that the country owes them something by freely borrowing funds from the banks and not bothering about repaying the loans.
