I heard rave sentiments about the work from everyone who had read it. Hence the curiosity!

Indeed! Inspired by the colossal acceptance of the Bahubali movie, historical dramas are on resurgence.

    Book musing:

    This paragraph intrigued me.

The messenger came back -- without Draupadi -- and reported, "she wanted to know whether she had been staked last or last but one, and when I told her that Yudhistira lost himself first and then lost her, she had the temerity to reply that the loss could not then bind her as Yudhistira had no authority to stake her when he was no longer a free man."

The Portia-crossed encounter is unknown to me. Draupadi called forth a technicality in pledging one's wife. Resoundingly, an enslaved man's 'free' wife could not gambled. Did RK Narayan make that up or this litigious scene is from the accredited canon. That's a fantastic point! Draupadi should be hailed as the earliest activist of human rights through acute reasoning. I like her.

Downloaded the book on a whim about the obsession of a man to read five boxes of twenty volumes of Oxford English Dictionary. Each chapter is a progression on his affliction to endure OED reading for months alongside his compilation of strikingly obscure and devilishly archaic words. The word 'finifugal' aroused me.

Finifugal (adj): Shunning the end of anything.
Many things in life deserve being finifugal about: the last twenty pages of a good book etc.

Pondered, what am I funifugal about -- discarding or avoiding the end of something.

While glutting on a tub of tiramisu, ensuring a wiggle worth of cream is stuck to the discarded tub to delude myself that I have not entirely mopped the dessert and feeling myself lighter at such spectacular abstinence. I resisted that last 1 gram of 1 calorie of objectionable fat!

Yes, that's my only finifugal glory!

"Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition" is an idiomatic phrase used when people are surprised that they are hauled in for a lot of hassle. [ I must look for the idiomatic phrase origin search on this] @satchitananda pinged up the memory of the python skit on this subject:

Reading the book, halted at chapter: Do we live in a simulation?

    upload_2019-5-8_15-45-16.png

Before the Matrix movie, anthropic simulations were niche discussions only in science fiction clubs. Today, everyone speculates existence could be simulation of beings with higher consciousness. Do I exist or am I made to feel like I exist? I wikipeded to simulation hypothesis following the bread crumbs of Nick Bostrom.

Consequences of living in a simulation:

Economist Robin Hanson argues a self-interested high-fidelity Sim should strive to be entertaining and praiseworthy in order to avoid being turned off or being shunted into a non-conscious low-fidelity part of the simulation. Hanson additionally speculates that someone who is aware that he might be a Sim might care less about others and live more for today: "your motivation to save for retirement, or to help the poor in Ethiopia, might be muted by realizing that in your simulation, you will never retire and there is no Ethiopia."

...say, I barely escaped being turned off with my 'entertaining and praiseworthy' shenanigans amusing the higher beings, still brings the question: suppose like Neo I discovered a crack in the simulation spell, would I confide the observation in someone ..Novalis going to Amulet .. I think something is wrong in our continuity.

More arguably, I might never retire as my sensory intake and episodic memories are only invented and there is no Ethiopia, would I consume the red pill or the blue pill? Hmm..red to awaken or blue to inhibit my suspicion about retirement and Ethiopia.

    May to December thoughts ?
here... go on and have an "episode":tonguewink: :

I was also messing about in the kitchen....
This is so deeply philosophical. A kwestin of this genre is asked about a spouse (and many other things) after a few years. Your action/decision depends on
    • how much your love can overlook the unsightliness
    • whether it is still "functional", and you don't need to look at it when it works
    • you don't need to display, and get praised for having it
    • whether you can cover it up with make up*
*make up = SS is not a good conductor of heat, whereas copper and aluminium are good. This is why they are coated (or clad) at the bottom as "heat spreaders", so that your food wouldn't stick to the bottom at the local hotspots. You can simply buy an aluminium or copper heat spreader (aka "heat diffuser", a disc you place on your burner/hotplate) or just use a piece of aluminium foil underneath your SS saucepan.

I'd already posted my first thought re. thoughts of Christmas in May.
My 2nd thought happened when I looked at an alert and found this:

LOL... when three old wiseguys from the east liked something, that was Christmas ! The birthday of baby Jesus.

The Miracle Chapati or Chapati Jesus is a chapati, or flat unleavened bread, roughly eight centimeters in diameter with, what believers claim, is an image of Christ miraculously burnt on it. The chapati was baked by Shella Anthony of Bangalore, India in early September 2002, enshrined in Bangalore, and visited by thousands of believers and curious onlookers.[1]

Interesting. I had never heard of this one. But then that is not a first, is it?
