    Dear Viswa,

Looks like you have reached back home, looking at the relaxed way you are giving FBs to so many threads here.

Five decades back, there were no departmental stores, but only ordinary local Kirana stores, where on giving a list of grocery items, the same would be delivered without fail. A vegetable vendor, a young lady, used to bring fresh vegetables, including leafy greens, which relieved me of buying or carrying up the daily dose of vegetables.

A CBSE school which was of walking distance, though not popular, saved me the trouble of hunting for schools for my DD. Thus every thing fell into perfection, except for a few heartburns I had in dealing with the inmates.

I enjoyed a lifetime of sea breeze, but the summers were horrible due to the hot winds blowing throughout the day. With all the positives and negatives, the anguish and pain, of leaving the house was beyond description!

Demolition or not, sometimes cutting of tree would become the necessity. We had a coconut tree at the backyard.Just to facilitate its bending towards sunlight we provided a slit in the parapet wall of the open terrace. In 1995 we went To Singapore for a period of 45 days to be with our daughter. My son was in Engg college hostel. My husband was the manager of the Mayuram branch then.I was staying alone in Chennai. On returning from Singapore ,my husband returned to duty.Next day I returned from office an hour early, went upstairs to check whether everything was in order. I saw blood stained legs everywhere on the open terrace flooring and I could see some foot prints near the slit and on the stem of the coconut tree as well.I was a little frightened. I was startled to see a mass of human poop, perhaps passed an hour early and a lump of human blood with thick tissues in a corner and a one foot long stick of pencil thickness, smeared with blood.I called my neighbours and showed the scene to them. There were no cell phones to take photos. The neighbour suggested that I should not go to police and if they come to know that I am all alone, they may themselves send some criminals.Without lodging a complaint we sought the help of a sub inspector friend attached to some other police station.
He examined the blood and confirmed it as 'female' blood( you know what it is' ).When we examined the water tank, the water was full of blood stains.
Putting two and two together ,we concluded that some man and woman from the nearby slum has climbed through the coconut tree ,reached the terrace
and had lived as man and wife ,taking advantage of our absence for a long time making the lady pregnant. They had tried to abort the foetus forcibly by inserting a stick and had succeeded in the process. That was the reason for poop and female blood.Just to wash off they had no water, and therefore opened the overhead tank which had some three feet water ,had a nice bath and escaped through the coconut tree. That was the reason for blood stained foot marks everywhere.
As this could happen repeatedly, we decided to cut off the coconut tree and raise parapet wall by two more feet, affixing glass pieces so that no one dared to climb. We removed all the water from OH tank, washed the entire open terrace, cleaned the tank well and refilled it with water.
To cut a grown kalpaka vriksham which supplies so much of coconuts, brooms and sheaths for use had to be mercilessly cut off for security reasons. We might have incurred divine curse ,but had much peace of mind later.

:hello:This is the crux of the macabre incident almost in all places where the area between building and its compound walls the least.
    2. All one ground plots with one or two storied buildings in city suffer same or and identical incidents from growing tall strong trees with multitude of branches.

    3. When I permitted a boy of 12 or 15 to pluck mangoes from tree 10’ away from building the ease with which he climbed and did the job in a space of twenty minutes I was astounded. He was not to be seen at the top of tree for sometime nor he dropped the bag filled mangoes from top. After ten minutes, I found him taking bath in terrace from a tap connected to the OH TANK.
    4. So many times with family, I left home locked for a week or fortnight, luckily never ever any one attempted to reach to burgle using terrace via mango tree.
    5. But this incident impelled me to get trim the tree and guarded the parapet wall with barbed wire fencing.
    6. One gardener had demonstrated so much love, he refused to cut the branches or remove the lemon and custard apple trees & பவழமல்லி in their “season” which were hindering free passage to natural light and I had to bear with bats menace which flew zig zag under street mercury VAPOUR lamp to attack each other and eat the ripe custard apples.
    7. But I consider in a broader sense that whatever we do little or more against Nature, we may be readied to pay price in some other form visible or invisible now or later.
    8. Shade giving, carbon dioxide absorbing and freeing or reducing from vehicle exhaust pollution, Trees were cut on the streets fearing in monsoon and storms they might fall on men and motors. On the other side, other wing of the same government department go along with honourable minister and other VIPs with lakhs of saplings to plant in streetswhich is publicity stunt. Tree cover is to be managed by regular pruning. There is a law to prosecute tree fellers.

    Thanks& Regards.
God has fixed marriage between rain bearing Nimbus clouds and forest with mountains as witness.

This is as exquisite as Bharathiar's
    Kaani nilam vendum paraasakthi
    Kaani nilam vendum
We all long for the kind of dwelling place as described by Bharathi and land up in a rat hole as Bharathi himself did in a cubicle in Triplicane.
Forget about housing. How do you make your blogs so beautiful no matter what your subject is? The last person that I saw doing it was RK Narayan. A bow to you (despite my aching back)

    Dear @Agatha83,
After a gap of nearly two months I logged into IL and the first post that caught my attention was Thirty Years Of A Relationship. Your style of writing is marvellous.

It kindled nostalgic memory of buying a plot at Pallikaranai and building our own house before our retirement as we wanted to settle down at Namma Chennai. Though my in laws had a house at Kancheepuram, The City Of Temples, we had to dispose it off as we were at Jamshedpur and the tenants had spoiled the house.

Anyway as planned we built our house before retirement and it was built by a contractor who had retired as civil engineer from L&T. The ground floor was built by the contractor and the first floor was built after we settled down for about five years. This was built by a painter cum mason under our own supervision.

We lived there for about fifteen years and then we had to leave that house and shift to my daughter's two bedroom apartment when she shifted to a bigger apartment and in the meanwhile Tambaram Velachery road had become congested and it took nearly two hours for my daughter to reach us in case of any emergency. Hence we left our house with an eching heart giving it on rent and later we had disposed it.

Now we are staying in a big apartment complex in a rented house near our daughter's apartment as my sons are abroad.

    Dear Cheeniya Sir,

I always admire Bharathi’s writings, but my sympathies always lie with his wife Chellamma, for whom life was a continuous struggle. Looking at the cubicle houses, some of them still remaining intact in Triplicane as well as Mylapore, I wonder how people lived together in perfect harmony, given its restricted spaces.

Suddenly when I felt a steep drop in namma Chennais searing heat, I realized it’s cause - your appreciative feed back. Really it’s so cool! Saaru, Namma English, konjam Peter vidura sshtylu! I can never ever dream of coming anywhere near RKN!
Thank you saaru, very very muchuu!

    Regards,

    Dear Pushpa,

Thank you for your appreciation! I think we all belong to the same group, because of the fact, that we shifted to be in close proximity to our children or parents. Having had a bad experience of having to deal with my MIL who had a severe heart problem, living on the 3rd floor with my sick mother, was a thing I couldn’t even dream about. So I had to shift to her place, leaving my comfortable abode of 30 years, once for all. I have no problem in living in a retirement community, if things come to a hopeless level!
