I believe "my money" is "our money".But like you said it depends on situation - if one partner will exploit that situation to use joint money for his own extended family excessively/for luxuries or spending irresponsibly instead of saving for their future/kids then nothing wrong in separating finances. Before joining finances, there has to be unconditional love and trust between partners ofcourse. But separating it's an unfortunate situation, because after marriage both partners are one and strict calculations will lead to heartburn, and people are forced to resort to separate finances incase one of the spouse has an exploitative FOO .

Clear communication is the key as the spouses are coming form 2 different environment, beliefs, temperament, behavior .... In my friend's case they were together for 4 years and discussed about it and both agreed it is for the best to keep finances separate before they got married. Major decisions should never be made at emotional level. Both partners should discuss objectively as to the pros and cons to avoid future misunderstanding/conflicts .

Yes this is very true. It’s wise to speak out all such things before marriage to avoid too many conflicts.

About badmouthing about the husbands family.
Sometimes the truth has to be told to the husband depending on the situation.

    1) The perception is different among people.
Sensitivity, can put a whole new spin on the truth.
2)How objective the truth teller can be?
3)One may think that husband is oblivious; may be not.
He may be trying to handle the situation in the best
possible way. That is where friendship in a marriage goes
a long way to enable the partners to discuss things
    objectively.
