Emotional post Satchi and you took everyone down memory lane. I have heard about it. I can understand how much you miss your mom so much.

I used to make pavadai from my sarees for my daughters as could not buy Pattu pavadai for them. My younger daughter's friend used to like her Pattu pavadai though her mother used to buy pattu pavadai for her. Her mother used to buy everything for her but she used to like what I buy. Once she told me you should have been my mother.

Sorry Vijima, I don't know how I missed your posts. Thanks a lot for the kind words. Yes, it does not matter whether we can afford new stuff or not, hand me downs from our parents are certainly very precious.

@satchitananda, I would nominate this snippet if you'd allow it. I was nodding along with every line. :)

    Dear Satchi,

I have read your snippet so many times now to understand how mother's saree is used in different forms to make the baby comfortable. One of them that came to my mind is Dhooli. Here is an article that is written about the benefit of making the baby sleep in Dhoolijooli. Nowadays, this method is dispensed with by most mothers.

Why Traditional Indian Saree Made Hammock is Imporant for Infants, Saree Cradle, Dhooli/Jooli

When I was growing up, I have seen many babies sleeping in it close to the floor. It does given them a lot of comfort while sleeping.

Lovely snippet, Satchi. Evoked so many thoughts and ponderings in me. And I keep reflecting on them and human nature and this and that the past few days.
Funny thing is even though you wrote what a godhadi is, until I read Gauri's post calling it gudari, I didn't make the connection! Then, I did an examination of the etymology of the term and how for us it changed over time to mean any old dress/sweater we were unwilling to give away.

The godhadi's my mom made used to be in high demand among relatives. Because only she wore cotton sarees in that generation, rest has moved to synthetic even for home-wear. I am lucky to have a stack of soft cotton sarees still folded and neatly pressed from my mom's only visit. I shopped too much for her to be able to take back the sarees she had brought.

I used one soft very worn saree to stitch a cushion cover for the seat and back of a glider/ rocker. Encouraged by the results I even made one for the ottoman/foot-rest.

Maybe I'll open that airbag of sarees this week, after so many years. Twenty to be exact. Or maybe not...Sirf ehsaas hai yeh, … haath Se Chhoo Ke Ise Rishton Ka Ilzaam Na Do (is only a feeling, don't touch and give the connection a name)

Reading the snippet was for me like checking a vessel of rice cooking. Tested a few grains of the heart and they looked well done.

    Dear Rihana,

That was the most beautiful, direct from the heart FB. Thanks so much for that.

    So loved that!

    Oh Satchi!
    That's a beautiful piece ( I don't want to call it a Snippet)
Mother is the best proof that Heaven does exist. I remembered a short film that I saw a few months back while I was idling over the net. Please see the heart touching portrayal of a mother.
