It was the day when Polar Vortex embraced most of the midwest causing deep freeze. From my kitchen window I was looking at the bird feeder which was swinging in the air. Birds were still visiting and pecking the grains as they flew away. I could see the footprints on the snow as they zig zagged and I could clearly tell it should have been of the deer. Poor deer always comes in search of water. So much fallen snow but not a drop to drink. At the same time a plump squirrel is happily nibbling the snow. Snow banks in the backyard is much colder than the freezer indoors. I remembered the last time how we stored our food in the snowbank when we had a power cut and had to live without power for few days.

In the distant tree I suddenly saw a huge bird with red tail that flew down with its wings so wide and perched on the branch of the tree beautifully camouflaging into the surroundings. Red tail Hawk is a frequent visitor in our backyard. Hawk is considered as a spirit animal in Native American culture. I have been seeing these Red-Tailed Hawks for years now. I have never seen its nest though.

I had to step out briefly for a doctor’s visit in this cold weather. As I stepped out and inhaled the fresh crisp air my nostrils hurt with the cold. Wind was blowing brutally and could hardly keep my eyes open. I could feel the chillness in my teeth too. My fingers within gloves had become numb. Extreme cold wind was making me shiver and I wondered how those birds/animals kept themselves warm in this cold weather. A cup of extremely hot coffee will be nice to hold than to drink I thought.

On my return I was caught off guard by the wonderful fragrance emanating from my small cozy family room. I noticed my flowers had bloomed. They were in pretty pink and looked so fresh and beautiful. Mini Orchids were initiating buds too. All of a sudden after coming from outside I noticed the fragrance. I had been home bound for the past couple of weeks due to my sickness and this fragrance had slowly filled my house but I had never noticed. In the peak of winter when not a single plant thrives outside I have a bloom of fresh flowers creating my own spring in my little living space and this thought left me wondering aren’t we the creators of our own happiness too!

Life always finds a way … It does! That’s what the birds, the foot prints in the snow, the red-tailed hawk, the squirrel and the bloom indoors kept insisting ! Life happens and it always happens beautifully in its own way if only we observe ! Now I am looking forward for my mini purple Orchids to bloom as it blooms only once a year. And then I received a message that put a smile on my face “The flowers you gave me for Christmas are still blooming”.

    Dear Lakshmi,
You are right. If we can see there is always a silver lining in every situation... even in freezing temperatures. We also enjoyed the fragrance.
