    Hello moms,
My 3yr old boy can speak words, rhymes, numbers, songs but he is not communicating..I mean if I ask something he won't answer me..I trained him few things like 'what is ur name' he vl answer those qstns bcz he trained..but he has no idea what I'm asking him..he vl just remember and say answers for those things I trained him..he has very good memory, but communication won't work like this right.? He should understand the concept of communication...

Guys plz give ideas on how I can help him in developing communication skills..

He won't even give eye contact when I'm speaking to him..he is going to preschool, there he won't even mingling with other kids..I'm so worried..he should learn socialise with people...how can I help him?

He vl cry if he needs something..I should understand what he needed..I want him to ask if he needs something...if he is having some problem l, he should explain me..but that's not happening..crying for everything..or he vl try to tell me through actions..I want him speak up..
Is it normal for a 3yr old..
Or how can I help him

    Hi TinkerBell,

I had the same issue with my daughter. She was diagnosed with speech delays at 3. The situation was exactly similar to you, she remembered all songs , alphabets but did not know to hold a conversation, had less eye contact . We met her pediatrician, who referred us to a speech therapist. Within a year she was out of speech therapy and learnt to commmunicate. Please visit a good pediatrician/development pediatrician, they will be able to guide. Not having good eye contact and not responding to name are few red alerts, But providibg right therapy at this young age can do wonders for your child.

We faced a similar issue too when my child was 3 and the speech therapist played a significant role within a span of few months.Since then there was no stopping and I still get complaints about his nonstop talking abilities from school.

Is he going to daycare or playing with elder kids. That will help. You can also consult a speech therapist. Is this your first child.

I have also faced this issue with my son. But I noticed a big change after he turned 4 years old. I used to ask his daycare teachers about it. They said he is interacting with them in normal way. When we are from multilingual background it can happen. In our case( live in USA), we used to talk to him in my mother tongue. But in daycare, all speak in english. If you are in similar situation, use the same language ( example English) every where. We didn't consult any speech therapist. My son started talking well non-stop, in full sentence instead of words, all of a sudden. We didn't face this issue with the younger one, because she had his brother there to talk. To my surprise they learned to speak in my mother tongue when they stayed in India for a while because of grand parents and others around them all the time.

Dont worry it will improve. Keep on talking to him.

    Where do you live??
Go to your paediatrician. She should refer you to a child psychologist.
You have clearly understood the difference between speech and communication.

    1) Never feed babies putting rhymes.... they think that's the real world.

    2) Interact with them a lot.... It is very crucial for the baby to have human interaction in the first year...

    3) Spend time with the baby a lot in the first year.

These all definitely lead to positive results in the succeeding years provided the child do not have health problems....
