As I entered the waiting lounge in the airport, I saw her. The one who stole my heart and never bothered to return. Look how she has changed in matter of six years. She was reading the latest John Grisham, the author I recommended to her once. Her kid who was sitting next to her pointed something in my direction and suddenly our eyes met.

Our eyes Met

‘Okay we are going to play an interesting game.’ I looked around to see that students are already high in excitement.

‘You need to tell a story in three words..’ I announced.

‘Three words? How it is possible?’ came the response.

‘Just try your best..Come on lets make it a game. I’ll start first..Life goes on’ I said aloud.

It was immediately followed by ‘It shall pass’ and ‘All is Well.’ I encouraged the group and they went on fine till she looked at me and said ‘Our eyes met.’

It was then I looked at her properly and I could easily say that she is the most beautiful girl in the class and looked different from others.

‘That’s a good one..’ I said and motioned the class to continue the game. I could sense that everyone was opening up and enjoying the game. I glanced at her to see her eyes are fixed on me.

‘She said yes’ said the boy and class giggled.

I brought the class in order and wrapped up the session in next fifteen minutes. I’m a freelance spoken English trainer doing training in the college near my native village.The college principal is my late father’s friend who helped me in securing this assignment. I’m in between jobs , so this opportunity came very handy.

While I was muddling with memories, her eyes were fixated on me. I wasn’t sure whether she recognized me and was debating whether I should go say a Hi to her. In between her kid threw some tantrum and she was handling it. I saw her father as well. Her father is still a powerful person in politics, six years back the mere sight of him, scared me.

That was scary

Next day post the class I was having few words with the principal when I found her waiting for me. She came near us and said ‘My father wants to meet you. Our car is parked there.’ she said and went by another car.

I couldn’t understand. I have been conducting this class for last three days and why would I meet her father. I was confused and looked at the principal for help.

‘Sanjay? You know her?’ Principal asked

‘No sir. I just know her from class. Don’t even know her name.’ I replied.

‘She is Preethi, daughter of MLA needless to say one of the powerful and wealthiest people in this area. When he asks someone to meet him, you go meet him.’ Principal replied.

I coaxed Principal into accompanying me who also wanted to meet him for some fund raising event. I couldn’t help marveling at the size of their house and remained looking at it for minutes.

‘Don’t keep the MLA waiting. Come inside’ Principal pushed me towards the house.

Though MLA was clad in lungi/T-shirt his face and voice reflected power. He spotted principal with me and asked in local dialect

‘Principal sir..How are you? Preethi studying well?’ then without waiting for reply he looked at me and asked’ You are that new English teacher?’

‘No I’m not teacher..I’m conducting training..’ Principal stopped me and said ‘Yes he is the new teacher.’ He moved his chair closer to MLA and said ‘He is our Guru’s second son working in city. You remember Guru right? MLA seemed to have recognized my father.

‘You are Guru’s son? He was a good man. You were working in city right?’ he questioned.

Principal took control of responding to him so I remained silent. ‘The company where he was working closed down. At the same time his brother too lost the job. So I called him here for assistance. He is a good trainer.’

‘Is he good?’ he asked Principal ‘Preethi wants to learn English and said he teaches well in college. He can start teaching her from tomorrow.’ He decided and declared.

Before I could protest Principal accepted offer on my behalf. I think he was expecting something more for being called to his house.

To my surprise her father recognized me. He took few steps in my direction and I went to him.

‘English teacher..I forgot your name..’ he said.

‘Sanjay …’

He immediately turned towards Preethi and gestured her to come. At the time he received a call and moved away.

‘How are you doing?’ she asked.

I’m feeling great

Principal negotiated a generous package for my English training and the MLA made a advance cash payment. Since that will ease out my current cash situation I readily agreed.

Preethi proved herself as a great student was eager to learn and improve her language. She asked my recommendation for good books to read and movies to watch. I was soon able to see drastic improvement in her.

I was hopelessly in love with her but due to the vast differences in our economic status I kept my feelings to myself.

I rarely get to meet her father and one day I was wrapping up the class he summoned me to have tea with him.

‘How’s her progress?’ he asked me.

‘She is doing great. Another few months, she will be a fabulous speaker.’ I said. I could see he was happy with the progress.

Before I could reply she said ‘I know you are doing great with your training academy. I have been following you on Linkedin.’

‘I’m flattered.’ I replied. ‘Hope you are great too. Your husband’s name is often in news.’

‘Mm..yes..thanks to you’ she said.

Thanks…..My thoughts drifted back.

I loved her

The extra income helped my family. I made a pact with Preethi to talk to me only in English and this ensured we spoke without worrying about others.

‘I loved reading this book.’ She said while handing me back the book I lent her.

‘I know you would.’ I said. One day I wrote about my feelings and hid that letter in the book I lent her. But fate had some other plans.

‘Sanjay , I’m going out of station next few days. Will call you once I’m back.’ She said on receiving the book from me.

Her vacation stretched and since she didn’t want to be contacted, it made me restless.

Almost that time, the college principal called me to talk regarding another training program. I casually mentioned about Preethi out of town.

‘Yeah I forgot to mention, I had a chance to meet the MLA before he started. He was really happy about Preethi’s progress. He said he will reward you suitably after engagement.’ Principal said happily.

‘Engagement? Who Preethi?’ I stuttered.

‘Yes don’t you know..He wanted marry his daughter to the industrialist son, who is foreign educated. This entire English speaking idea is to enable her to converse well. I thought you knew about it.’ Principal explained.

I was shattered beyond words and felt stupid. What if she had alerted her father regarding the letter? Any action from him would cost me a lot.But thankfully nothing happened and she was married soon. As the MLA promised I was suitably rewarded and I didn’t get to meet Preethi after that.

Her kid came in search of her and curiously looked at me. He appeared to be a mini version of Preethi. I touched his cheeks and asked his name.

‘I’m Sanjay.’ The little boy said.

I looked at Preethi as if I was demanding an explanation when those three words ‘I loved you’ from her pierced me.

‘I still have the letter with me. You know it wouldn’t have happened and would have landed you in huge trouble.’ She said as afterthought. I know she was right. Soon I heard boarding announcement for my flight and I had to bid goodbye to her.
