A thread to post soulful Bolly melodies from the last decade. Of late there has been spate of lilting tunes with poetic lyrics to match. Let's create a stirring playlist for long drives and solo flights. I listed Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Arijit Singh and Atif Aslam because those are my three favorites for now but I know there is a fantastic crop of younger male singers out there. Few of Bollywood's new singing ladies have made an impression on me but if you have recommendations I am all ears. : )

Going by YouTube comments and Twitter wars there seems to be a serious rivalry among the fans of Atif Aslam and Arijit Singh. There are pages and pages on Quora debating which one is the superior singer. Like Sonu Nigan who seems to have faded away, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is in a league of his own. I know Atif Aslam is a little kachha (unripe) on the sur and taal front but his voice and accent have a unique haunting quality to it. If I had to rank them I'd say,

Technical mastery - Arijit Singh>>Atif Aslam
On quality of voice alone - Atif Aslam > Arijit Singh

Here is one of my top 10 favorite songs of the last decade in both their voices. The original is a duet by Atif Aslam and the reprise is a solo by Arijit Singh. The lyrics are simply wow!

main na jahan chahoon, na aasman chahoon,
aa ja hisse mein tu mere....

Atif Aslam again with Dil Diyaan Gallan...from Tiger Zinda Hai. He has a Pakistani Punjabi accent that I simple adore. Whenever I play him in the car Mr husband goes, "Is that your nasal Pakistani again?" He's just jealous. :D

It has been a great year, indeed a few years, for such songs. They suddenly spring up on me from the radio or some app in the car or at an Indian restaurant, and then I go looking for the movie etc. Sometimes younger company obliges with using their Shazam app after the required eye roll.

Dil Diya Gallan - simply love love love this one. I can even watch Salman Khan for the song if listening on youtube in the next browser tab.

Could not get enough of it, and also listen to this delightful veena version sometimes.

    Main rang sharbaton ka -
As often, discovered this on the way back from a sans-kids lunch when we can play Hindi songs in the car without feeling the silent protest vibes from the backseat. : ) The afternoon sun warming the seat, I dreamily asked which movie this is from. Mr. said, "Phata poster nikla hero". I could respond only with 'la haul valla...' imitating Om Prakash or Rehman of yesteryears.

Both songs very hummable and touch parts of the heart and soul one rarely visits.

Another one on my current playlist is Yeh jo Halka Halka. I searched for which is the most original and not sure. In fact, I first listened to the movie version many times and came across the other one later.

NFAK version is better recorded than the RFAK for this song.

The movie version is also good though a faster beat

@Gauri03 One more wonderful thread.. the holidays and long drives effect..
have you read atif aslma's esophagus is discussed frequently??.. thank god for small mercies, the kids love soulful numbers too..and infact the dh copies what dd keeps in her playlist on and off.. only worry is him killing of the lyrics during his long drive..or playing a song in loop,, we are a musically krazzy family...
    let me start with altaf..

i love this song, his accent is a little mellowed in this one??, or the original. his 2002/03 competition it was still mellow?? and later it has been made into his usp..

RFAK is eons ahead of his peers and has made his uncle proud, but his versions of NFAK's songs pale in comparison. NFAK was a legend.

Agar tum saath ho and Paaniyon sa are both big favorites. Beautiful songs!
