I park my car, thinking of the last time I was there. With thoughts of beautiful fall colors occupying my mind as I start walking, I run into a woman mumble an automatic 'good morning', walk ahead only to realize that I have run into a dead end. I turn around and as I walk back, I run into the same woman and this time I mumble with a smile "I wasn't thinking" at the same time realizing it is because of all that thinking that I had taken the wrong path! What an irony, I think!
As I walk through the grounds, the chirping of birds, the gently sprouting trees, the stop and go squirrels collecting food remind me of the abundance of life. What an irony, I think!

I see a runner go by, then a little further on my walk, a group of other runners come by! Here I am with a camera dangling around my neck walking. I see a woman walking with a rosary, a broad serene smile on her face observing a pair of geese. I turn around to watch the geese land in the little man-made pond with so much noise as if to tell the whole world that there they are, together. That reminds me of the time when I have run into brides and grooms at the same place. I wonder about all the life that everyone seems to find here. What an irony, I think!

I continue my walk, taking pictures, taking in all that is happening around me in that silence and come upon a weeping willow. This one has not grown very tall but has chosen to spread out wide closer to ground reminding me of the giant trees of Costa Rica. I am reminded of an aunt who always tells me to get/stay rooted as a tree and spread my branches and offer what I can to everyone who comes near me! Finally, I smile!

As I see the groundsmen doing work around the place, trying to keep it clean and beautiful, I think of the recent history tour we had taken on our travels and finally understand that the people who have passed on influence us as much as the living. I am reminded of the Native Indian quote "Suddenly all my ancestors are behind me. “Be still” they say. Watch and listen you are the result of the love of thousands”. Somehow it is very heartening to remember that quote. The smile stays!

I come home, rush to take an immediate shower (the practicing Hindu that I am!), light a lamp to God thinking of Shiva, praying that I may be blessed with the ability to become that person who can make a difference.

I look out the window see the same life around me - flowering trees, squirrels, chirping birds. I watch the gently falling raindrops and think of the weather forecast threatening snow in a day. I think of my fruit plants flowering already and hope they are not affected too much. I look at my potted plants growing in anticipation of good weather, tell them ‘one more day before I can take you out’. I now know that life is simply to be experienced! As if in answer, I hear the radio play “zindagi ka saath nibhatha gaya mein”.

As I continue to look through the rain-soaked windows, the next song that plays is “gun guna rahe hai bhavare” in the background making my heart race wild with joy! Yes, all that joy is waiting to be felt and experienced!

PS: There is a historic cemetery in the city I live in and tours are conducted routinely, and this place is a paradise for natural beauty. A visit to that place inspired this snippet.

    Dearest Srama,

You made my day. The joy I feel when I read your snippets cannot be explained. You have the blessings to make the reader feel just like you were feeling that moment. What your aunty said to you to get/stay rooted as a tree and spread my branches and offer what I can to everyone who comes near me! is echoing and I am too smiling. I too truly pray the almighty to give me the blessings to make a difference in at least one person's life.
Thank you Srama and love to you all. Indeed the joy is waiting to be felt and experienced.

    My dear Sabi
Some people think and then smile. Some smile and think about why they smiled. I belong to the second category. Because I am a firm believer in smiling without a reason. This is the effect of aging. The mind is full of reasons to smile about. I belong to the category of recall and smile! As you grow old, the bad memories fade away leaving room for only the joyful recollections.
All cemeteries are historic. Every person that stays buried there has a history behind him that makes his family visit the place again and again.
We have all been sent here to make a difference. It has no dimensions. I may make a difference to a cat or dog. Or I may change the life of a rickshaw puller by helping him to buy an auto rickshaw. Bringing a smile on the face of a soul sharing this planet with us is not a tough assignment. That's what we call a purposeful life. There is a story of a King in Tamil. As he drives around in a forest in his chariot, he notices a jasmile creeper that gets entwined in the chariot as the king was away. He does not cut off the creeper as we would do but leaves his chariot for the creeper to grow on.
When I sit in the club and listen to the discussion on what charity project they must take up next, I just smile. I wonder why I smiled on hearing this discussion.

    Dear Vani, @girvani

you are such a darling! Thank you for giving your feedback. Your words make me feel elated. Just yesterday I was telling a friend that I cannot write until I feel and your words make it all worthwhile. Thank you! Often when I feel lost I think of what this aunt has said and it always makes me feel better. I am also learning that it is not that easy to be rooted.

Yes! It is amazing how lovely it feels to wake up to birds chirping. Enjoy with your little ones.

    Dear Sabita,
Very beautifully written......a beautiful flow of thoughts.
We also walked watching the lady saying Good morning, listened to the birds, watching squirrels, watched geese along with you.
Best is weeping willow and your aunt's quote......very true. Yes, you are right. Roots cannot be taken away. We may be anywhere in the world. My nieces...who were born and brought up in USA visited India last year. Took a south tour. They say the feeling they got in Madurai Meenakshi temple .....nowhere in the world. Only reason they could give "Mom and dad had their roots here and so are we!"
I read your blog again and again....poetry in the form of prose!
    Thank you Sabita once again.

Hey Sabitha, so lovely to read one of your magical pieces once again. There is no worship like appreciating the works of the creator and the beauty of Nature. You, through your mindful living, do that to the fullest.

Reading your snippet brought a smile of joy to my face, just imagining the scene your words painted. Then CS's response made me not just smile but to break out into a cackle of laughter! I, like him, find myself smiling often at some funny memories and suddenly come to the present to find myself lying back with a broad smile plastered on my face. Cemeteries and history! Of course! He hit the nail on the head as usual! :)

Dear Sabitha, your snippets always remind me of this quote,

“If we are ever to enjoy life, now is the time, not tomorrow or next year. Today should always be our most wonderful day.” ~Thomas Dreier

You have such an uplifting way of observing and absorbing that which would blur into the background for most people. Every snippet of yours leaves me a little more aware, more present and more grounded in appreciation of the simpler joys. Such a lovely description of life in a place where all journeys end. It is the stark contrast that gives definition to both. Would we appreciate life if it wasn't inextricably intertwined with loss? In the irony lies the secret to balance, the yin and the yang!

    Dear Cheeniya Sir,

It is always nice to get a feedback from you and I am pleasantly pleased to get one for this snippet. And without even thinking about it, you put a smile on my face with your feedback. :)

One thing I can tell you sir, no two things - you make it sound like aging is such a wonderful thing and second thing is you proved a point that smiling Cheeniya sir is WAAAY better than this grumpy old man winter. What is this he showing up with this snow and all at this time of the year? You know how many of my fruit trees have flowers already and I am only sitting inside and hoping that I will get all that fruit, come summer. He definitely has proved that grumpy now can carry on....to summer! I certainly hope not!

Absolutely sir, I only meant as it being recognized as one by the government and all that and there is a fascinating story associated as well.

Thank you for your thoughts on smiles and sir, continue to keep that smile on your face :)

    Dear Syamala,

Thank you as always for your lovely feedback. I was worried writing about it but then you know, thoughts and sharing...oh well! Thanks to warm feedbacks I receive here, it makes it all worthwhile.

Your nieces are so very right and they are pretty smart to realize their roots. I often tell my kids and students as well not shy away from their roots.

    You made my day! Thanks!

    Dear Satchi,
    @satchitananda
You know you guys here make me feel so loved and mostly so accepted! Thank you. I am sure it will not surprise you if I said this is not my first visit either. There are some swans in the lake and I completely enamored by them and then there is my photography teacher insisting I make these hikes to get the pictures. One time he said "I will take you to the place where all of us will have to go one day!" see how pretty it is and he is right! I had a window of just three before the storm hit to take my walk and I am glad I made it!

    Thank you for your words.
